Enhancing s-CO2 Brayton Power Cycle Efficiency in Cold Ambient Conditions Through Working Fluid Blends

Supercritical carbon dioxide (s-CO2) Brayton cycles have emerged as a promising technology for high-efficiency power generation, owing to their compact architecture and favorable thermophysical properties. However, their performance degrades significantly under cold-climate conditions—such as those encountered in Greenland, Russia, Canada, Scandinavia, and Alaska—due to the proximity to the fluid’s critical point. This study investigates the behavior of the recompression Brayton cycle (RBC) under subzero ambient temperatures through the incorporation of low-critical-temperature additives to create CO2-based binary mixtures. The working fluids examined include methane (CH4), tetrafluoromethane (CF4), nitrogen trifluoride (NF3), and krypton (Kr). Simulation results show that CH4- and CF4-rich mixtures can achieve thermal efficiency improvements of up to 10 percentage points over pure CO2. NF3-containing blends yield solid performance in moderately cold environments, while Kr-based mixtures provide modest but consistent efficiency gains. At low compressor inlet temperatures, the high-temperature recuperator (HTR) becomes the dominant performance-limiting component. Optimal distribution of recuperator conductance (UA) favors increased HTR sizing when mixtures are employed, ensuring effective heat recovery across larger temperature differentials. The study concludes with a comparative exergy analysis between pure CO2 and mixture-based cycles in RBC architecture. The findings highlight the potential of custom-tailored working fluids to enhance thermodynamic performance and operational stability of s-CO2 power systems under cold-climate conditions. The increasing global demand for food, combined with rising climate extremes, is driving agricultural expansion—often without sufficient consideration for sustainability. Greenhouse agriculture presents a promising solution to address the dual challenges of food security and climate change mitigation. This study models potential scenarios for the expansion of greenhouse agriculture in Imbabura Province, Ecuador, while adhering to sustainability criteria. Two widely used methods were compared: the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) model. The GIS-AHP method relies on expert-defined weights, whereas the MaxEnt model utilizes the probabilistic distribution of presence-only data, enabling a complementary evaluation of both subjective and data-driven approaches. Both models incorporated various factors, including topographic, climatic, hydrological, ecological, infrastructural, agricultural, and soil-related variables. The results classified the territory into five levels of suitability for greenhouse expansion. The GIS-AHP model identified 20,761.64 hectares as highly suitable, while the MaxEnt model identified only 5618.15 hectares. This discrepancy highlights the differing influences of various factors: In the GIS-AHP, land cover/use, irrigation availability, and proximity to existing greenhouses were the most influential. In contrast, in the MaxEnt model, proximity to greenhouses was the dominant factor. These findings not only provide a spatially explicit foundation for sustainable territorial planning but also contribute methodologically by integrating both data-driven and expert-driven approaches. This supports evidence-based policy-making in fragile Andean ecosystems. Full article

In the context of central solar receiver systems, the utilisation of S-CO2 Brayton cycles as opposed to Rankine cycles confers a number of advantages, including enhanced efficiency, the requirement for less sophisticated turbomachinery, and a reduction in water consumption. A pivotal consideration in the design of such systems pertains to the thermal storage system. This work undertakes a comparative analysis of the performance of an S-CO2 Brayton cycle utilising two distinct types of molten salts, namely solar salts and chloride salts (MgCl2–KCl), as the heat transfer fluid on the thermal energy storage medium. The present study adopts an energetic and exergetic perspective with the objective of identifying areas of high irreversibility and proposing mechanisms to reduce them. The work is concluded with an analysis of the size of the different components. The overall energy efficiency is determined as 22.29 % and 23.76 % for solar and chloride salts, respectively. In the case of chloride salts, this efficiency is penalized by the higher losses in the solar receiver due to the higher operating temperature. The exergy analysis shows that using MgCl2–KCl salts increases exergy destruction in the recuperators, lowering irreversibilities in other components. While the sizes of all components decrease when using chloride salts, the volume of the storage system increases. These results demonstrate that the incorporation of MgCl2–KCl salts enhances the performance of S-CO2 recompression cycles operating in conjunction with a central solar receiver. Full article

DR is a complex complication of DM with multiple biochemical pathways implicated in its genesis and progression. Circulating OS and mitochondrial function biomarkers represent potential candidates in the DR staging system. We conducted a comparative cross-sectional study comparing the OS biomarkers: TAC, GR, NOS, CARB, and hydroperoxydes, as well as mitochondrial function biomarkers: ATP synthase and ATPase activity in healthy volunteers, DM w/o DR, Moderate and Severe NPDR, and PDR. TAC is progressively diminished the more DR progresses to its proliferative stages. GR and NOS may function as biomarkers to differentiate the progression from S NPDR to PDR. CARB may correlate with the progression from M NPDR to S NPDR. Hydroperoxide levels were higher in patients with DR compared to DM w/o DR expressing OS in the early development of DR. ATPase activity is increasingly augmented the more DR progresses and may function as a biomarker that reflects the difference between N PDR and PDR, and ATP synthesis was lower the more DR progressed, being significantly lower compared to DM w/o DR. The behavior of OS and mitochondrial function in several stages of DR may aid in the staging and the prognosis of DR. Full article

Objectives: Acinar cell carcinoma (ACC) accounts for about 1% of pancreatic cancers. The molecular and clinical features of ACC are less characterized than those of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the clinical and molecular features of ACC patients who underwent germline and/or somatic molecular testing at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center from 2008 to 2022 and two cases from 2023–2024 who underwent RNA and TME analysis by Boston Gene. Patient information was extracted from our institutional database with the approval of the Institutional Review Board. Results: We identified 16 patients with available molecular testing results. Fourteen patients had metastatic disease, one had borderline resectable disease, and one had localized resectable disease at diagnosis. Fifteen patients were wild type for KRAS (one patient had unknown KRAS status). Somatic/germline mutations of DNA damage repair genes (BRCA1/2, PALB2, and ATM) were present in 5 of 12 patients tested for these genes. One patient was found to have RET fusion and responded favorably to selpercatinib for over 42 months. The median overall survival (OS) was 24 months for patients with metastatic disease. One of the additional two cases who underwent BostonGene testing was found to have NTRK1 fusion. RNA and TME analysis by Boston Gene of the two cases reported immune desert features and relatively lower RNA levels of CEACAM5, CD47, CD74, and MMP1 and higher RNA levels of CDH6 compared with PDAC. Acinetobacter bereziniae has emerged as a significant human pathogen, acquiring multiple antibiotic resistance genes, including carbapenemases. This study focuses on characterizing the plasmids harboring the blaNDM-1 and tet(Y) genes in two carbapenem-resistant A. bereziniae isolates (UCO-553 and UCO-554) obtained in Chile during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Antibiotic susceptibility testing was conducted on UCO-553 and UCO-554. Both isolates underwent whole-genome sequencing to ascertain their sequence type (ST), core genome multilocus sequence-typing (cgMLST) profile, antibiotic resistance genes, plasmids, and mobile genetic elements. Conjugation experiments were performed for both isolates. Results: Both isolates exhibited broad resistance, including resistance to carbapenems, third-generation cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, tetracycline, cotrimoxazole, and aminoglycosides. Both isolates belong to sequence type STPAS1761, with a difference of 17 out of 2984 alleles. Each isolate carried a 47,274 bp plasmid with blaNDM-1 and aph(3′)-VI genes and two highly similar plasmids: a 35,184 bp plasmid with tet(Y), sul2, aph(6)-Id, and aph(3″)-Ib genes, and a 6078 bp plasmid containing the ant(2″)-Ia gene. Quinolone-resistance mutations were identified in the gyrA and parC genes of both isolates. Importantly, blaNDM-1 was located within a Tn125 transposon, and tet(Y) was embedded in a Tn5393 transposon. Conjugation experiments successfully transferred blaNDM-1 and tet(Y) into the A. baumannii ATCC 19606 strain, indicating the potential for horizontal gene transfer. Conclusions: This study highlights the critical role of plasmids in disseminating resistance genes in A. bereziniae and underscores the need for the continued genomic surveillance of this emerging pathogen. The findings emphasize the importance of monitoring A. bereziniae for its potential to cause difficult-to-treat infections and its capacity to spread resistance determinants against clinically significant antibiotics. This manuscript reviews two decades of projects funded by the Kirkhouse Trust (KT), a charity registered in the UK. KT was established to improve the productivity of legume crops important in African countries and in India. KT’s requirements for support are: (1) the research must be conducted by national scientists in their home institution, either a publicly funded agricultural research institute or a university; (2) the projects need to include a molecular biology component, which to date has mostly comprised the use of molecular markers for the selection of one or more target traits in a crop improvement programme; (3) the projects funded are included in consortia, to foster the creation of scientific communities and the sharing of knowledge and breeding resources. This account relates to the key achievements and challenges, reflects on the lessons learned and outlines future research priorities. Full article

Floods cause significant damage to human life, infrastructure, agriculture, and the economy. Predicting peak runoffs is crucial for hazard assessment, but it is challenging in remote areas like the Andes due to limited hydrometeorological data. We utilized a 300 km2 catchment over the period 2015–2021 to develop runoff forecasting models exploiting precipitation information retrieved from an X-band weather radar. For the modeling task, we employed the Random Forest (RF) algorithm in combination with a Feature Engineering (FE) strategy applied to the radar data. The FE strategy is based on an object-based approach, which derives precipitation characteristics from radar data. These characteristics served as inputs for the models, distinguishing them as “enhanced models” compared to “referential models” that incorporate precipitation estimates from all available pixels (1210) for each hour. From 29 identified events, enhanced models achieved Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) values ranging from 0.94 to 0.50 for lead times between 1 and 6 h. A comparative analysis between the enhanced and referential models revealed a remarkable 23% increase in NSE-values at the 3 h lead time, which marks the peak improvement. The enhanced models integrated new data into the RF models, resulting in a more accurate representation of precipitation and its temporal transformation into runoff. Full article

The uncontrolled spread of fire can have huge effects on ecosystems. In Ecuador, in 2022, wildfires caused a loss of 6566.66 hectares of vegetation cover. Ibarra is an Andean canton that has also been exposed to wildfires and their effects. The aim of this study was to map wildfire susceptibility in the Ibarra canton. Seven factors that directly affect these fires were examined: precipitation, temperature, water deficit, potential evapotranspiration, slope, proximity to roads, and land cover and land use. The variables were reclassified using Geographic Information Systems and a multicriteria analysis. The results showed that Ibarra has four susceptibility categories: very low, moderate, high, and very high. The more susceptible areas are those considered to have high and very high exposure, occupying 82% of the surface. Consequently, the most susceptible land covers are crops, pastures, shrub vegetation, and forests. Full article

The 17-4 PH stainless steel is widely used in the aerospace, petrochemical, chemical, food, and general metallurgical industries. The present study was conducted to analyze the mechanical properties of two types of 17-4 PH stainless steel—commercial cold-rolled and direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) manufactured. This study employed linear and nonlinear tensile FEM simulations, combined with various materials characterization techniques such as tensile testing and nanoindentation. Moreover, microstructural analysis was performed using metallographic techniques, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results on the microstructure for 17-4 PH DMLS stainless steel reveal the layers of melting due to the laser process characterized by complex directional columnar structures parallel to the DMLS build direction. The mechanical properties obtained from the simple tension test decreased by 17% for the elastic modulus, 7.8% for the yield strength, and 7% for the ultimate strength for 17-4 PH DMLS compared with rolled 17-4 PH stainless steel. The FEM simulation using the experimental tension test data revealed that the 17-4 PH DMLS stainless steel experienced a decrease in the yield strength of ~8% and in the ultimate strength of ~11%. A reduction of the yield strength of the material was obtained as the grain size increased. Full article

To assess ventilatory evolution through the Ventilatory Workload Kinetic Index (VWKI) in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) during stability and exacerbation. Retrospective analysis. Conducted at the Padre Alberto Hurtado Hospital, Santiago, Chile. Ten patients with asthma and fifty-five with COPD participated. Sixty-five clinical records were reviewed. The VWKI in stability and exacerbation of these patients was extracted. When analyzing the baseline with the peak in both asthma and COPD, there was a significant increase in the VWKI. Similarly, the loads, translations, and supports significantly increased from the baseline to the peak. However, in the loads, there were no changes in airway resistance for asthma or in cough for COPD. Likewise, the supports for asthma and COPD showed no changes in the O2. The VWKI determined ventilatory issues in outpatients and made locating the greatest compromise in loads, translations, or supports possible. Full article

Abstract
Lupus nephritis (LN) is the most frequent and severe complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). A prospective cohort with a six-month follow-up was performed. Lupus nephritis (LN) is the most frequent and severe complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). A prospective cohort with a six-month follow-up was performed. Twelve SLE patients diagnosed with LN Class III, twelve NL Class IV patients, and twelve healthy control subjects (HC) were included. SLE data, renal function, oxidants, antioxidants, and inflammation were determined at baseline and six-month follow-up. During the six-month follow-up, the SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI-2K) decreased in both LN Class III (20.08 ± 6.92 vs. 11.92 ± 5.87, p < 0.001) and LN Class IV (25.33 ± 6.01 vs. 13.83 ± 5.52, p < 0.001) patients. Furthermore, the values of the C4 component also increased during follow-up for LN Class III (25.36 ± 6.34 vs. 30.91 ± 9.22, p = 0.027) and LN Class IV (12.18 ± 3.90 vs. 20.33 ± 8.95, p = 0.008) groups. Regarding inflammation markers, both groups presented decreased C-reactive protein (CRP), but this was only significant for patients with LN class III (7.93 ± 1.77 vs. 4.72 ± 3.23, p = 0.006). Renal function remained stable in both groups, with no changes in eGFR. Patients with LN Class III and Class IV showed higher baseline levels for lipoperoxides (Class III p < 0.01, Class IV p < 0.1) and carbonyl groups in proteins (Class III p < 0.01, Class IV p < 0.1) compared to HC. Moreover, both groups presented lower baseline values of total antioxidant capacity (Class III p < 0.01, Class IV p < 0.1) and catalase (Class III p < 0.01, Class IV p < 0.1) compared to HCs. However, antioxidant and oxidant markers did not show significant differences between baseline values and at six months for either of the two study groups. In conclusion, patients show an imbalance in the oxidative state characterized by the increase in the oxidants LPO and protein carbonyl groups and the decrease in the activity of the antioxidant enzymes TAC and CAT compared to HC. However, the patients did not present an increase in disease activity and renal function improvement. The glomerular filtration rate did not change during the length of the study, and SLEDAI -2K, C3, and C4 improved. The early co-management between Rheumatologists and Nephrologists is essential to prevent the rapid progression of LN. It would be interesting to administer antioxidant supplements to patients with a recent diagnosis of LN and evaluate its effect in a follow-up study. Full article

So far, about 770.1 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been counted by August 2023, and around 7 million deaths have been reported from these cases to the World Health Organization. In Ecuador, the first confirmed COVID-19 case was registered on 19 February 2020, and the country’s mortality rate reached 0.43% with 12986 deaths, suggesting the need to establish a mechanism to show the virus spread in advance. This study aims to build a dynamic model adapted to health and socio-environmental variables as a multivariate model to understand the virus expansion among the population. The model is based on Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR), which is a standard model in which the population is divided into six groups with parameters such as susceptible S(t), transit stage E(t), infected I(t), recovered R(t), deceased Me(t), infected asymptomatic Ia(t), infected symptomatic Is(t) and deceased by other causes M(t) to be considered and adapted. The model was validated by using consistent data from Chile and run by inconsistent data from Ecuador. The forecast error was analyzed based on the mean absolute error between real data and model forecast, showing errors within a range from 6.33% to 8.41% for Chile, with confidence a interval of 6.17%, then 3.87% to 4.70% range for Ecuador with a confidence interval of 2.59% until 23rd December 2020 of the database. The model forecasts exponential variations in biosecurity measures, exposed population, and vaccination. Full article

Postpartum depression (PPD), postpartum anxiety (PPA), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among birthing people have increased substantially, contributing to adverse maternal/infant dyad outcomes, with a high prevalence in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Despite calls for trauma-informed care in the NICU and high rates of post-traumatic stress, little research has examined the rates of or the relationships between peripartum mood and adverse child experiences (ACEs) in NICU mothers or evaluated which peripartum traumas are most distressing. This study employed structural equation modeling (SEM) to explore whether peripartum-related traumas and NICU-related stressors mediated the associations between ACEs and mental health outcomes in 119 lower-income, racially diverse mothers in a Level IV NICU. Mental health concerns were prevalent and highly comorbid, including 51.3% PPA, 34.5% PPD, 39.5% post-traumatic stress, and 37% with ≥4 ACEs. The majority (53.8%) of mothers endorsed multiple peripartum traumas; NICU admission was the most common trauma (61%), followed by birth (19%), pregnancy (9%), and a medical event in the NICU (9%). Our SEMs had good fit and demonstrated that ACEs predicted peripartum distress. Trauma-informed care efforts should employ transdiagnostic approaches and recognize that women commonly present to the NICU with childhood trauma history and cumulative peripartum traumas. Beta-2 microglobulin (B2M) is an immune system protein that is found on the surface of all nucleated human cells. B2M is naturally shed from cell surfaces into the plasma, followed by renal excretion. In patients with impaired renal function, B2M will accumulate in organs and tissues leading to significantly reduced life expectancy and quality of life. While current hemodialysis methods have been successful in managing electrolyte as well as small and large molecule disturbances arising in chronic renal failure, they have shown only modest success in managing plasma levels of B2M and similar sized proteins, while sparing important proteins such as albumin. We describe a systematic protein design effort aimed at adding the ability to selectively remove specific, undesired waste proteins such as B2M from the plasma of chronic renal failure patients. A novel nanoparticle built using a tetrahedral protein assembly as a scaffold that presents 12 copies of a B2M-binding nanobody is described. The designed nanoparticle binds specifically to B2M through protein–protein interactions with nanomolar binding affinity (~4.2 nM). Notably, binding to the nanoparticle increases the effective size of B2M by over 50-fold, offering a potential selective avenue for separation based on size. We present data to support the potential utility of such a nanoparticle for removing B2M from plasma by either size-based filtration or by polyvalent binding to a stationary matrix under blood flow conditions. Such applications could address current shortcomings in the management of problematic mid-sized proteins in chronic renal failure patients. Full article
