Micropropagated plantlets, after removal from controlled laboratory conditions, require an acclimatization period. Adaptation to the new environment induces anatomical and physiological changes controlled by cellular processes. This study investigated the involvement of the primary proton transport systems of total membranes in pineapple root colonization by diazotrophic bacteria and in the development of plantlets treated with different nitrogen doses, allowing an understanding of nutrient absorption and accumulation dynamics. The experiment followed a randomized block design (RBD) in a factorial scheme (2 × 3 × 2), with two inocula (a mixture of diazotrophic bacteria containing Burkholderia sp. UENF 114111, Burkholderia silvatlantica UENF 117111, and Herbaspirillum seropedicae HRC 54, and another without bacteria), three urea doses (0, 5, and 10 g L−1), and two evaluation (90 and 150 days) and bacterial counting times (30 and 150 days), with three blocks. Diazotrophic bacterial populations were lower in older plantlets. H+ transport mediated by P H+-ATPases changed with acclimatization time. Inoculation did not induce transport; however, the Fmax of V H+-ATPase was lower without nitrogen fertilization. Nitrogen fertilization affected V H+-ATPase proton transport activity in root membranes. The presence of diazotrophic bacteria did not induce proton transport. On the other hand, nitrogen fertilization and acclimatization time affected the proton transport activity mediated by H+-ATPases isolated from roots of micropropagated pineapple. Full article

Dengue, Zika, yellow fever, chikungunya, and Mayaro arboviruses represent an increasing threat to public health because of the serious infections they cause annually in many countries. Serological diagnosis of these viruses is challenging, making the development of new diagnostic strategies imperative. In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of gold nanorods (GNRs) functionalized with specific anti-dengue and anti-orthoflavivirus antibodies in detecting viral particles. GNRs were created with a length-to-width ratio of up to 5.5, a size of 71.4 ± 6.5 nm, and a light absorption peak at 927 nm, and they were treated with 4 mM polyethyleneimine. These GNRs were attached to a small amount of monoclonal antibodies that target flaviviruses, and the viral particles were detected by measuring the localized surface plasmon resonance using an UV-Vis/NIR spectrometer. The tests found Orthoflavivirus dengue and Orthoflavivirus zikaense in diluted human serum and ground-up mosquitoes, with the lowest detectable amount being 100 PFU/mL. The GNRs described in this study can be used to enhance flavivirus diagnostic tests or to develop new, faster, and more accurate diagnostic techniques. Additionally, the functionalized GNRs presented here are promising for supporting virological surveillance studies in mosquitoes. Our findings highlight a fast and highly sensitive method for detecting Orthoflavivirus in both human and mosquito samples, with a detection limit as low as 100 PFU/mL. Full article

(1) Background: We examined the effect of the acute administration of olive oil (EVOO), linseed oil (GLO), soybean oil (SO), and palm oil (PO) on gastric motility and appetite in rats. (2) Methods: We assessed food intake, gastric retention (GR), and gene expression in all groups. (3) Results: Both EVOO and GLO were found to enhance the rate of stomach retention, leading to a decrease in hunger. On the other hand, the reduction in food intake caused by SO was accompanied by delayed effects on stomach retention. PO caused an alteration in the mRNA expression of NPY, POMC, and CART. Although PO increased stomach retention after 180 min, it did not affect food intake. It was subsequently verified that the absence of an autonomic reaction did not nullify the influence of EVOO in reducing food consumption. Moreover, in the absence of parasympathetic responses, animals that received PO exhibited a significant decrease in food consumption, probably mediated by lower NPY expression. (4) Conclusions: This study discovered that different oils induce various effects on parameters related to food consumption. Specifically, EVOO reduces food consumption primarily through its impact on the gastrointestinal tract, making it a recommended adjunct for weight loss. Conversely, the intake of PO limits food consumption in the absence of an autonomic reaction, but it is not advised due to its contribution to the development of cardiometabolic disorders. Diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infections is mostly based on the nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS). However, this collection is invasive and uncomfortable, especially for children and patients with coagulopathies, whose NPS collection often causes bleeding. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness and accuracy of saliva for the diagnosis of COVID-19 in patients presenting bleeding disorders. Samples of NPS, oropharyngeal swabs (OPS), and saliva were collected simultaneously from 1159 hospitalized patients with hematological diseases and from 524 healthcare workers, both symptomatic and asymptomatic for SARS-CoV-2. All samples were evaluated for SARS-CoV-2 by qRT-PCR. SARS-CoV-2 was detected in NPS, OPS and saliva from 16.9%, 14.4% and 15.6% individuals, respectively. Tests in saliva showed sensitivity, specificity, and overall agreement of 73.3%, 96.9% and 92.7% (=0.74), respectively. Salivary tests had good accuracy (AUC = 0.7) for discriminating negative and positive qRT-PCR for SARS-CoV-2. Higher sensitivity was observed in symptomatic than in non-symptomatic patients, as well as in healthy subjects than in patients with hematological disease, in both OPS and saliva. The mean viral load in NPS was significantly higher than in OPS and in saliva samples (p < 0.001). Saliva is a good diagnostic tool to detect SARS-CoV-2, especially among patients symptomatic for COVID-19, and is a valuable specimen for mass screening of hospitalized patients with hematological diseases, especially for those that with bleeding disorders. This paper presents a brief report on the history of the Dandara Occupation, in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Through a general panorama of the strategies and resistance of the residents and movements involved; this paper shows the importance of the occupied territory in the struggle for the right to housing in the city. Through the narratives of the residents, references and photographic remnants of the initial years of the occupation, a temporal line is developed to the present day that reveals the challenges and opportunities for the people of Dandara in the making of their community.
