This article considers a fluxgate magnetometer (FM) that operates based on a new physical principle. The authors analyze how the alternating electric charge potential of a cylindrical metal electrode impacts the structure of a cylindrical permanent magnet made of composite-conducting ferrite. They demonstrate that this impact and permanent magnet structure initiate the emergence of polarons with oscillating magnetism. This causes significant changes in the entropy of indirect exchange and the related sublattice magnetism fluctuations that ultimately result in the generation of circularly polarized spin waves at the spin wave resonance frequency that are channeled and evolve in dielectric ferrite waveguides of the FM. It is demonstrated that these moving spin waves have an electrodynamic impact on the measuring FM coils on the macro-level and perform parametric modulation of the magnetic permeability of the waveguide material. This results in the respective variations of the changeable magnetic field, which is also registered by the measuring FM coils. The authors considered a generalized flow of the physical processes in the FM to obtain a detailed representation of the operating functions of the FM. The presented experimental results for the proposed FM in the field meter mode confirm its operating parameters (±40 μT—measurement range, 0.5 nT—detection threshold). The usage of a cylindrical metal electrode as a source of exciting electrical change instead of a conventional multiturn excitation coil can significantly reduce temperature drift, simplify production technology, and reduce the unit weight and size. Vibration diagnostics based on vibroacoustic signal data belong to the most common ways to monitor the technical condition of equipment and technical structures. The paper considers the general issues of vibration-based diagnostics and shows that in general, it is required to monitor both axial and torsional oscillations, as well as the inclination angle, occurring during the operation of various technical objects. To comprehensively monitor these parameters, a hybrid vibration sensor is proposed, simultaneously implementing three operating modes: recording linear displacements of the vibrating object; recording the rotation angle of the object at its torsional oscillations; recording the object angular deviation from the vertical component of the natural local geomagnetic field, i.e., the inclinometer mode. The proposed hybrid sensor design is described, and a theoretical analysis of the sensor’s operation in each of the aforementioned operating modes is performed. The authors show that in the inclinometer mode the sensor actually operates as a fluxgate meter. Generalizing the results of the sensor’s operation simultaneously in all three operating modes, an equation for the total output data signal has been obtained, which allows for obtaining the required information on the current values of linear displacements and rotation and inclination angles by selectively filtering it with respective three filters tuned to specific frequencies. The experimental studies of the proposed hybrid vibration sensor confirmed its ability to record various vibrational disturbances and changes in the inclination angle of the monitored object. The paper considers non-destructive testing (NTDs) as a means to solve the flaw detection problems of magnetic products. It proposes a new probe-coil magnetic-field NDT, not requiring the pre-magnetization of the test object material, which is mandatory for all conventional magnetic flaw detection techniques. A new bifactor excitation of the fluxgate sensor’s sensitive element, based on double μ-transformation through the simultaneous activation of magnetic-modulating and electromagnetic-acoustic effects, is theoretically justified. The physical processes underlying the proposed technique are considered in detail, and a scheme for its practical implementation is described. The authors provide a variant of the new fluxgate’s original design, implementing the proposed excitation technique. The specifics of implementing the fluxgate operating modes are analyzed, testifying to the possibility of detecting a given class of flaws with the required coverage as well as ensuring the required diagnostic resolution during flaw detection, which, in fact, indicates a more reliable identification of both the flaw type and location. Herewith, the new fluxgate type features the advantages of improved functionality and lower cost due to its simple design. The paper also considers a method to experimentally study the capabilities of the proposed fluxgate sensor with a new bifactor excitation in detail. The results of the experimental study into its key specifications are provided, confirming its high resolution, narrower zone of uncertainty, and the possibility of detecting smaller flaws at greater depths compared to available analogs. The authors review the techniques applied to diagnose oil aging. Further, the authors put forward a new diagnostic method. It stipulates for an additional high-frequency measuring loop formed in an operating transformer. This dielcometric measuring capacitor cell includes a stray capacitance generated by the transformer winding and core. The monitoring of the dependence between the physico–technological oil parameters and the measuring cell capacity is fundamental for the procedures for determining the composition and properties of the transformer oil filling this cell. High-frequency low-voltage is the output signal. To prevent the cross-impact of low-frequency high-voltage and high-frequency low-voltage circuits, the pilot high-frequency low-voltage is excited by a special coupling capacitor; the output to the power feeder is conducted through an appropriate low-frequency choke, where the measuring capacitor cell does not disturb the normal transformer operation. The key physical processes used for the monitoring are analyzed and described in detail. The authors develop an algorithm to compute the current resistances of both the transformer oil and its impurities. The transformer state is estimated by comparing the parameters specified with preset permissible limits. A structure flowchart based on two synchronous quadrature detectors is proposed for a high-frequency measuring loop. The monitoring system considered allows for determining the following insulating oil properties by using the algorithm for processing the recorded data: moisture content; dielectric losses due to the accumulation of aging products in the oil and its pollution; and the content of dissolved gases in the oil. The monitoring system operability and efficiency are confirmed by appropriate experimental studies. The experiments are conducted using a TM-25-6/0.4 oil-filled transformer with a capacity of 25 kVA in a steady-state operating mode at a load current of 25 A. It is found that the proposed control system allows for identifying a critical defect of increased moisture content in the oil with no more than 10% error, and a sensitivity threshold in the order of tenths of ppm. This paper discusses the author-developed novel method for the detection of buried metal objects that combines two basic subsurface sensing methods: one based on changes in the electromagnetic field parameters as induced by the inner or surficial impedance of the medium when affected by a propagating magnetic field; and one based on changes in the input impedance of the receiver as induced by the electromagnetic properties of the probed medium. The proposed method utilizes three instrumentation channels: two primary channels come from the ferrite magnetic antenna (the receiver), where the first channel is used to measure the current voltage amplitude of the active input signal component, while the second channel measures the current voltage amplitude of the reactive input signal component; an additional (secondary) channel comes from the emitting frame antenna (the transmitter) to measure the current amplitude of the exciting current. This data redundancy proves to significantly improve the reliability and accuracy of detecting buried metal objects. Implementation of the computational procedures for the proposed method helped to detect and identify buried objects by their specific electrical conductance and magnetic permeability, while also locating them depth-wise. The research team has designed an induction probe that contains two mutually orthogonal antennas (a frame transmitter and ferrite receiver); the authors herein propose a metal detector design that implements the proposed induction sensing method. Experimental research proved the developed combined method for searching for buried metal objects efficient and well-performing. Full article

Monitoring the thermal state of windings of electrical machines is a backbone for protection from unacceptable overheating. A large number of different methods and systems aim to solve this problem. This article discusses the main known methods of thermal protection of electric motors and provides their comparative analysis. This paper shows that the most promising methods are those based on control of the current active resistance of the stator winding, as its value uniquely depends on temperature. It is demonstrated that the known methods have a number of disadvantages. A new phase method for thermal protection of AC motors is proposed. The method is based on the fact that a temperature-induced change in the active and reactive components of the winding impedance causes a corresponding change in the angle between the vectors of phase voltages and currents. This allows for thermal protection by controlling the change in this angle. This article provides tabular analytical substantiation of the proposed method, which is based on the direct measurements of voltage and current and the subsequent algorithmic calculation of physical values functionally related to the sought angle. The authors develop a structural block diagram of a device that implements the proposed thermal protection method. All relevant experimental studies were carried out. In this case, a small-sized electronic thermometer with a remote digital temperature sensor connected to the USB port of a personal computer was used as a temperature meter. The results obtained confirm the functional capability and efficiency of the proposed technical solution. Full article
