Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sustainability research must prioritize advancements in new material technologies and production methods; however, critical gaps remain in exploring how shifts in business practices and market dynamics can foster their adoption and real-world use.

Bridging diverse fields of knowledge and their practical implementations demands cross-disciplinary collaboration. For instance, engineering publications could expand their focus to include sustainable market applications, business education might integrate insights from sustainability specialists through guest engagements or faculty roles, and finance experts should reevaluate risk frameworks to align with long-term sustainable growth.

Exploring innovations in agriculture—from cultivation to distribution—will be pivotal. While food and water security are foundational to all communities, sustainability discourse often overemphasizes high-tech solutions at the expense of accessible, low-tech approaches. How can small-scale African growers of organic, non-GMO maize connect with eager European markets? What implications do large-scale energy projects (like dams supporting AI and other energy needs) have for sustainable energy use patterns? How might urban design optimize energy efficiency? And what roles do businesses and markets play in addressing shifts in workforce and movement driven by climate shifts?

This Issue centers on “Transcending Disciplinary Lines,” welcoming contributions from scholars working at these interdisciplinary intersections—areas often underrecognized in traditional academia. Emphasis is placed on actionable, real-world solutions that advance sustainability in tandem with viable growth models.
