Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

A Special Issue of the journal Sustainability will address the sustainability of animal production systems. This problem views sustainability as maximizing the good effects of animal programs while limiting the negative effects. Environmental health, economic profitability, and social and economic equality are the three fundamental aims of sustainable animal production. The global demand for animal products is predicted to increase in the coming years as the global quality of living rises. The adoption of new and sustainable techniques is thus required to preserve a balance between productivity, human and animal security, and environmental preservation. Because sustainability indicators frequently interact in opposite directions, sustainable livestock production should be handled as a multi-criteria issue that optimizes a balanced mix of sustainability criteria across all themes. A system or technique is sustainable if it is acceptable today and if its predicted future impacts, particularly in terms of resource availability, are acceptable. Innovations in the sustainable development of livestock production systems can help to solve some of the sector’s difficulties. More study in this area is needed to lessen stress on animals and increase their welfare, health, and productive performance.

The goal of this Special Issue is to include original research papers as well as review articles on the efficiency and sustainability of animal production systems. Papers from all species are welcome if they are about farmed and managed animal systems or add knowledge to them (e.g., poultry, cattle, buffalo, sheep, pigs, rabbits, and fish). Special (but not exclusive) focus is placed on the following topics:

  • Opportunities and challenges in the sustainability of animal production systems;
  • Factors affecting sustainability;
  • Climate change and effects on the sustainability of animal systems;
  • Green production methods and technologies;
  • Sustainability of animal use and demand for animal products;
  • Sustainable animal welfare, health, and biosecurity measures;
  • Sustainable animal nutrition and physiology;
  • Smart technology and precision livestock farming;
  • Organic farming;
  • Achieving environmentally sustainable livestock production.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
