Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Today, education—as a means of transmitting knowledge and facilitating innovations in science and technology—and artificial intelligence, as the core driving force leading the scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, can—by virtue of their powerful capabilities in data processing, pattern recognition, and prediction—become a important tools for promoting the transformation of educational content, methods, and systems toward sustainability. An increasing number of countries are incorporating sustainable education into national policies and the curriculum, and many scholars are actively exploring interdisciplinary research. The surge in the number of online education platforms and open educational resources has also laid a solid foundation for the development of education for sustainability (ESD). However, problems still exist, such as imbalances in educational levels, difficulties in interpreting teaching effectiveness, and differentiation in educational communication; therefore, it is urgent to apply artificial intelligence in the education sector to realize the sustainable development of education.

This Special Issue invites submissions that focus on the applications of artificial intelligence in promoting sustainable education. We welcome research papers based on empirical data or typical cases that explore how artificial intelligence supports curriculum development for sustainable development, teaching evaluation, and education management—for example, efficient learning with the help of artificial intelligence, sustainable literacy assessment based on natural language processing, interdisciplinary sustainable course designs with the aid of artificial intelligence, etc.—so as to advance theoretical innovation and practical dissemination in the cross-field of artificial intelligence and sustainable education.

This Special Issue welcomes original research articles and commentaries. Research areas include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Explainable artificial intelligence: Using explainable AI algorithms to reveal behavioural factors in the educational and learning process.
  • Evaluations of AI-driven educational development: Comprehensive evaluations of the contributions and application effectiveness of artificial intelligence in the field of sustainable education.
  • Technological dependency and resilience: Explorations of the dependencies and risks that may arise when artificial intelligence is applied to educational tasks.
  • Fairness analysis of instructional algorithms: Investigations of fairness issues around artificial intelligence in educational settings, and their corresponding countermeasures.

I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
