Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping the architecture of social platforms, transforming how individuals communicate, form relationships, seek support and experience community. These AI-augmented environments are no longer passive channels of interaction; they actively create content, mediate communication, detect behavioral signals and influence emotional and social experiences. As such, they are emerging as powerful socio-technical systems with significant implications for psychosocial well-being at individual and population levels.

Psychosocial well-being is shaped by interconnected psychological, communicative and social processes. Digital spaces are increasingly becoming the places where those processes happen and many of them are now shaped by AI. AI tools can identify patterns in language and behavior that may signal stress, loneliness, depression, or social withdrawal, offering possibilities for earlier detection and intervention. AI systems can also make communication easier through language assistance, accessibility features, conversational agents and interfaces that adapt to a person’s needs. Taken together, these developments suggest that social platforms are becoming important spaces for more inclusive communication and for offering psychological support to a wide range of communities.

However, the integration of AI into social platforms raises critical questions regarding ethics, governance, privacy, equity, bias and accountability. Researchers and practitioners in human–computer interaction, psychology, public health, communication studies and policy all have to collaborate in addressing those questions. Despite growing interest in AI and digital well‑being, existing research often focuses on isolated risks or single‑platform dynamics, leaving a need for integrated frameworks that investigate the full psychosocial impact of AI‑mediated environments. To build digital spaces that are both responsible and inclusive, it is important to understand from different perspectives how AI‑mediated social platforms actually shape people’s social and emotional experiences.

This Special Issue of Societies invites researchers to submit their original research articles, reviews, and conceptual papers that examine the role of AI-augmented social platforms in influencing psychosocial well-being. We welcome contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following: AI for mental health and psychosocial monitoring; AI-driven communication and speech-language support; public health applications of social platforms; ethical and regulatory frameworks; inclusive and accessible design; individual and population impact; socio-cultural determinants of digital well-being.

Contributions to this Special Issue must be in the form of an article, conceptual paper or review and should address the topic of the Special Issue. By bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives, this Special Issue aims to advance theoretical, empirical and design-oriented scholarship that reimagines AI-augmented social platforms as infrastructures for sustainable psychosocial well-being.
