Dear Colleague,
The construction industry stands at the threshold of a profound transformation. While the sector has traditionally followed established practices and conventional project delivery methods, the convergence of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is opening the door to a new era of smart construction — one characterized by data-driven decision-making, automation, and intelligent collaboration across the entire building lifecycle.
BIM has significantly advanced how built assets are designed, constructed, and managed through rich, multidimensional digital representations. Now, its integration with AI is unlocking new frontiers. Machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and generative design algorithms are transforming BIM from a comprehensive digital model into a dynamic, predictive, and increasingly autonomous system. From intelligent design optimization and automated scheduling to digital twin-enabled asset management and sustainability-driven performance forecasting, AI-enhanced BIM environments are enabling unprecedented levels of efficiency, quality, and environmental responsibility in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry.
This evolution, however, presents important challenges alongside its opportunities. Effective integration of BIM and AI requires high-quality, interoperable data, while the industry continues to mature in areas such as data standardization and digital readiness. Moreover, questions surrounding trust in AI-generated outputs, workforce development, ethical considerations, and the scalability of intelligent systems across diverse project contexts remain areas of active investigation.
This Special Issue addresses the latest advances, ongoing challenges, and emerging research needs at the intersection of Building Information Modelling and Artificial Intelligence for smart construction, from both scientific and practical perspectives.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sci is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
