Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Calibration and validation of remote sensing satellites are the technical core of quantitative remote sensing, laying the foundation for converting sensor-acquired digital signals into physically meaningful geospatial information. With the rapid development of high-resolution, hyperspectral, and microwave remote sensing satellites, the accuracy of radiometric, geometric, and spectral calibration directly determines the reliability of subsequent data inversion and application. This research area is crucial for bridging the gap between satellite observations and earth system science research, supporting fields such as climate change monitoring, environmental assessment, and resource investigation, and ensuring the comparability and usability of cross-satellite and long-time-series data. In recent years, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) methods, such as deep learning and machine learning, has shown great potential for improving the efficiency and accuracy of calibration and validation, enabling more robust handling of complex sensor characteristics and large-scale data.

This Special Issue aims to gather cutting-edge research findings on remote sensing sensor calibration and validation, promoting the innovation of calibration methods, optimization of validation protocols, and application of advanced AI technologies. It aligns with the journal’s focus on quantitative remote sensing, sensor technology, and earth observation applications, catering to the academic demands of researchers in aerospace, remote sensing, and geoscience. By integrating theoretical breakthroughs and engineering practices, the issue will provide a platform for exchanging ideas, advancing the standardization of sensor calibration, and enhancing the application value of remote sensing data in global change.

Suggested themes include absolute/relative radiometric calibration, spectral calibration, geometric calibration and precision evaluation, validation of inversion products, and the use of AI techniques for automated calibration, uncertainty quantification, and validation. Accepted article types are original research papers presenting innovative calibration algorithms or validation experiments, facilitating comprehensive and in-depth discussions on key issues in sensor calibration and validation.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Remote Sensing is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
