Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Hearing disorders represent a major global health challenge, affecting more than 1.5 billion individuals worldwide. While substantial progress has been achieved in understanding cochlear degeneration and sensorineural hearing loss, advances in tympanic membrane regeneration, middle ear inflammation and inflammatory inner ear disorders remain dispersed across disciplines. This Special Issue aims to integrate molecular, cellular and translational perspectives in otology, with particular emphasis on: (1) regenerative strategies for tympanic membrane repair; (2) the molecular pathophysiology of otitis media, tympanofibrosis and tympanosclerosis; (3) immune and inflammatory mechanisms underlying inner ear dysfunction, including labyrinthitis and cochlear homeostasis disruption.

Recent innovations in biomaterials, growth factor delivery, stem cell biology and tissue engineering have expanded the therapeutic possibilities for tympanic membrane reconstruction. Concurrently, progress in molecular otology and immunology has clarified the roles of fibrosis, epithelial migration, cholesterol metabolism and innate immune signaling in chronic middle and inner ear disorders.

By bringing together basic researchers and clinician-scientists, this Special Issue seeks to bridge mechanistic discoveries with surgical and regenerative innovation. It complements existing literature by emphasizing translational continuity from molecular pathways to therapeutic intervention, thereby accelerating the development of evidence-based treatments in hearing science.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Medical Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
