Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid expansion of biological and medical data—ranging from genomics and proteomics to medical imaging and electronic health records—has created an urgent need for innovative approaches that can efficiently and accurately process, analyze, and interpret this information. Machine learning (ML), when combined with robust mathematical frameworks, offers powerful tools to help address these challenges. This Special Issue will focus on recent advances in mathematical machine learning (MML) and its transformative applications in biology and medicine.
The primary goal of this Special Issue is to demonstrate how mathematical rigor enhances the development and application of ML methods, creating models that are not only accurate but also interpretable and biologically meaningful. In particular, this issue will emphasize how MML is being applied to solve pressing problems in medicine, from disease diagnosis and personalized treatment planning to drug discovery and predictive modeling in patient care.
We welcome submissions that explore both the development of new mathematical machine learning models and their practical applications in biology and medicine. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Mathematical models for disease diagnosis and prognosis using ML in clinical settings.
- Optimization techniques in ML applications for biological/imaging data and precision medicine.
- Mathematical approaches to multi-omics data integration for uncovering disease mechanisms.
- Stochastic modeling in medical data analysis for handling uncertainty in biological systems.
- ML for real-time decision making in healthcare, guided by mathematical control theory.
- Graph-based and network analysis for understanding biological networks and disease pathways.
- Mathematical frameworks for predictive modeling in personalized healthcare.
- ML in computational biology for protein folding, drug–target interactions, and system biology modeling.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Mathematics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
