Dear Colleagues,
The pupil plays a pivotal role in visual performance and clinical diagnostics, functioning as both an optical modulator and a non-invasive biomarker of ocular and systemic health. Variations in pupil size and dynamics directly influence depth of focus, retinal image quality, and the success of vision-enhancing interventions, including intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, corneal inlays, small-aperture optics, and pharmacologic treatments for presbyopia. At the same time, pupil responsiveness offers valuable diagnostic information in neuro-ophthalmology and general medicine, particularly for detecting early signs of neurological and systemic disorders.
This Special Issue will explore the clinical implications of pupil function across a range of diagnostic, pharmacological, and surgical applications. Topics of interest include the effect of pupil size on visual quality and acuity; optimization of multifocal and small-aperture IOLs; surgical outcomes influenced by pupil dynamics; pharmacologic modulation of the pupil; pupillometry in disease detection; and age-related changes in iris biomechanics.
We welcome original research, reviews, and clinical studies from ophthalmology, optometry, neuro-ophthalmology, and vision science. By bridging optical mechanisms with translational and clinical practice, this Special Issue will highlight how understanding and managing pupil behavior can enhance both visual outcomes and systemic health assessment.
