Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The landscape of education is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the rapid evolution of digital technologies and their increasing integration into learning environments. From sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) to immersive extended reality (XR) and adaptable mobile learning platforms, digital tools are reshaping pedagogy, assessment, personalization, and the educational experience. This Special Issue of Information aims to explore the innovative advancements being made in digital learning processes, which encompass a broad spectrum of technologies and approaches, and focus on information theory, methodologies, intelligence, applications, and communications technology. We particularly encourage submissions that detail experimental and theoretical results in full, aligning with the journal's core principle of reproducability. Scope and Topics of Interest:

This Special Issue welcomes original research articles and reviews that explore the diverse and multifaceted aspects of transformative digital learning experiences. We encourage submissions that explore innovative uses of technology in education, with a particular interest in, but not limited to, the following key themes, all of which are considered through the lens of Information's subject areas:

  • Information Theory and Methodology in Digital Learning and Evaluation: This includes, but is not limited to, coding theory applied to personalized learning pathways, the information-theoretic security of student data, quantum information's potential role in future learning technologies, and the philosophical/ethical implications of information in education, learning, and XR;
  • Information Intelligence for Enhanced Learning: Exploring knowledge management in educational contexts, the role of social media and social networks in learning, big data and cloud computing for learning analytics, artificial intelligence in education (including AI-driven personalized learning, automated assessment, and ethical considerations), the role of XAI in learning, and the Internet of Things/Everything in educational settings;
  • Information Processes in Education: Focusing on the digital signal processing of learning data, data mining for educational insights, and information extraction for personalized content delivery;
  • Information Applications for Learning: Examining human–machine interfaces in learning platforms, the role of information in social development through education, business process management in educational institutions, and the impact of blockchain and emerging technologies (like using NFTs for credentials) on learning;

Specific Areas of Interest:

  • AI and Machine Learning in Education: explainable AI, generative AI, automated assessment, learning analytics, AI-enhanced content curation, AI for accessibility, AI literacy;
  • Emerging Technologies: VR/AR/MR/XR, mobile learning, learning analytics, blockchain, OER;
  • Ethical Digital Learning: instructional design models, UX/UI, accessibility, student inclusion;
  • Assessment and Evaluation: digital assessment methods, learning analytics for assessment, and validity and reliability in digital assessments;
  • Contextual Factors and Regulations: digital equity, the digital divide, teacher training, institutional policies, the impact of AI regulations.

We look forward to receiving high-quality submissions that contribute to advancing our knowledge of digital learning processes and align with the scope and aims of Information.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Information is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
