Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue focuses on Java-based architectures, frameworks, and software systems that enable the development, deployment, and operation of artificial intelligence applications in modern computing environments. As Java continues to play a critical role in enterprise systems, distributed platforms, and real-time applications, there is a growing need for research that bridges AI methodologies with robust, scalable Java technologies.
The issue emphasizes system-level and software engineering perspectives, including how machine learning, deep learning, and data-driven intelligence are integrated into Java-based platforms. Contributions are expected to address architectural design, system integration, performance optimization, and interoperability challenges encountered when deploying AI within distributed, cloud, edge, and real-time environments using Java.
Particular attention is given to practical and deployable intelligent systems, such as AI-enabled enterprise applications, real-time decision-making systems, and large-scale data processing pipelines implemented in Java. Studies on explainability, trustworthiness, security, and reliability are encouraged, especially when these properties are addressed at the system or framework level rather than the purely algorithmic level.
By concentrating on Java-centric intelligent computing systems, this Special Issue aims to present actionable insights and reusable design approaches that support the reliable adoption of AI in complex, real-world software ecosystems.
Topics of Interest:
- Design of Java-based architectures for deploying machine learning and AI applications;
- Integration of AI components into Java enterprise systems and microservice ecosystems;
- Java frameworks and middleware for scalable and distributed intelligent systems;
- Performance optimization and resource management for AI workloads in Java environments;
- Real-time and low-latency intelligent systems implemented using Java platforms;
- Deployment of Java-based AI systems across cloud, edge, and hybrid infrastructures;
- Interoperability between Java systems and external AI toolchains or models;
- Software engineering methods for developing, testing, and maintaining AI-enabled Java applications;
- Explainability, trustworthiness, and security mechanisms embedded in Java-based intelligent systems;
- Case studies and industrial applications of AI-driven Java software systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Information is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
