Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH) is currently organizing a Special Issue on People and the Planet: Using Informatics to Understand the Health of Individuals, Communities, and the Environment. For detailed information on the journal, I refer you to https://www.mdpi.com/journal/ijerph.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2009), understanding the relationships between planetary and human health is a priority for scientists and clinicians. Gutpa et al. (2019) urge scientists and clinicians alike to communicate the unprecedented environmental degradation that now threatens both human health and our global life-support system. Data science/informatics is both an exploratory method and explanatory science that can contribute to critical conversations through the provision of data-driven solutions. Cross-cutting methods are needed to link individuals, communities, their local environments, and planetary health. Developing informatics strategies for understanding human health within the context of community and environment, as well as understanding the cost of human health optimization in the context of planetary health is crucial in transforming the conversation toward establishing a win–win approach for optimizing both human and planetary health. Furthermore, the value proposition for optimizing both human and planetary health must be addressed if health systems are to be engaged in the conversations.

This Special Issue will explore the use of informatics approaches toward addressing and resolving the gap between human, community, environmental, and planetary health outcomes. The keywords listed below provide an overview of some of the possible areas of interest.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2500 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
