Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Over the past several decades, environmental sustainability has raised global concerns across governmental, academic, and industrial communities. In the quest for energy conservation and emission mitigation of activity, researchers have endeavored to optimize and improve environmental performance at multiple scales. Their prerequisites are the accurate and comprehensive evaluation and monitoring of systems given onsite or offline data on manufacturing operations, pollutant migration, solid and hazardous waste, etc. Modern environmental monitoring systems have systematically incorporated geographic information systems, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud-based platforms, wireless sensor networks, and AI algorithms. Such smart systems enable the more streamlined and intelligent sensing and monitoring of air, water, waste, energy, or biodiversity under a wide range of conditions. Considering that the main objective of environmental monitoring is to manage and minimize environmental impacts, practical environmental monitoring and evaluation are usually conducted in conjunction with environmental data analysis, monitoring alerts, process control, and decision-making.
This Special Issue of IJERPH focuses on cutting-edge environmental assessment, monitoring, analysis, and diagnosis technologies to provide deeper insight into environmental sustainability. Papers regarding these topics are encouraged for this Special Issue, particularly those developing novel and advanced environmental monitoring, impact, and evaluation techniques in service, industry, and agriculture applications. We welcome multiple manuscript types, including original research papers, reviews, case reports, etc. The following are examples of topics in this Special Issue:
- Environmental impact assessment;
- Life-cycle assessment;
- Environmental process monitoring or control;
- Statistical analysis of environmental systems;
- IoT- or AI-based environmental monitoring;
- Advanced monitoring strategies;
- Anomaly/change detection in environmental systems;
- Environmental evaluation applications;
- Barriers and outlooks of environmental monitoring and evaluation;
- Predictions based on environmental time series;
- Fate and transport of pollutants;
- Environmental monitoring applications (including but not limited to air, water, energy, waste, soil, noise, and biodiversity).

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2500 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue
- Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
- Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
- Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
- External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
- Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
