Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is well known that although the physiological aging process is determined by genetic factors, it can be modified by environmental influences, comorbidities and, above all, by lifestyle. Proper nutrition and regular physical activity are crucial for the so-called “successful aging”, especially for cardiovascular health.

The cardioprotective effect of diet and exercise on health is based on the reduction of the risk of cardiovascular diseases (primary prevention) and, particularly in older adults, is part of the treatment of already existing diseases (secondary prevention, cardiac rehabilitation). Physically active seniors are more fit and thus remain independent. Physical training, depending on its type, increases aerobic performance (delays the decrease in VO2max) and muscle strength. Systematic, moderate physical exercise together with a properly balanced diet (quantitatively and qualitatively) positively affects metabolism (increases the resting metabolic rate), nutritional status, anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, cardiorespiratory function or, in general, physical and mental well-being.

This Special Issue focuses on the current state of knowledge on the links between nutrition, physical activity, and cardiovascular health in older adults, taking into account the impact of various types of exercise, specialized diets, exercise and nutritional interventions, as well as sedentary lifestyle and dietary mistakes. We invite researchers in geriatrics, dietetics, sports medicine, physiology, cardiology, cardiac rehabilitation, public health, and other related sciences to submit high-quality empirical papers or systematic reviews.

We look forward to your contribution.
