Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Florence Nightingale’s environmental theory, formed by her experiences over the course of her adult life of service, was practical in the approach to remedying human suffering. Her theory, viewed as a systems model, focuses on the person in the center surrounded by components of the environment, all creating a balance for human health. Ms. Nightingale’s theory addresses the influence of fresh air and ventilation, thermal comfort, natural light, and nutrition as factors working together to provide a supportive environment for health.
This Special Issue focuses on the influence of interior design on human health and wellness and aims to highlight relevant and recent developments in interior design research related to human health and wellness.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Design for health;
- Indoor environmental quality (indoor air quality, natural and artificial lighting, natural views, acoustics, thermal comfort, material composition, and occupant control);
- Designing for healthy behaviors to improve nutrition and increase physical activity;
- Environmental exposures such as VOCs, SVOCs, added chemicals, particulate matter and the impact on health;
- Mental health and psychological wellness including social support, sense of place, stress, sleep quality, and respite;
- Access to nature;
- Smart buildings and technologies that support wellness and health;
- Health outcomes;
- Methodological and ethical issues.
All submitted manuscripts will go through a rigorous peer review process. We welcome contributions featuring interior design research that impacts health and wellness.
