Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Dementia places a considerable burden on the healthcare system, as well as on individuals and their caregivers. Challenging behaviours are the leading factors for nursing home admission. Non-pharmacological approaches are now considered the mainstay of therapy of challenging symptoms in dementia, supplanting pharmacological interventions. They often aim to facilitate the well-being and improve the quality of life of someone with dementia.

These approaches often encompass social and psychological innovations, yet the potential of technology has also been recognized. Effective social and technological innovations for the better care of people with dementia are still scarce. This Special Issue will focus on the current research in the prevention and intervention of challenging behaviours using new technologies for persons with dementia (all types and stages of dementia), especially in long-term care settings. We prefer manuscripts drafted by multidisciplinary research teams. All types of research papers (qualitative, quantitative) and reviews are welcome.

Potential topics in view of emerging technologies for prevention and intervention include, but are not limited to:

  • IoT smart homes;
  • Technologies with AI-based voice control;
  • Wearables and apps based on artificial intelligence;
  • Other AI-based solutions.
