Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Sexual minorities (lesbian, gay, and bisexual people) face a multitude of health inequalities, including poor mental health, poor sexual health, a higher risk of physical health conditions, and substance misuse. These inequalities are attributed, in part, to social and psychological factors, such as identity issues, exposure to minority stress, and decreased cultural competence in healthcare systems. Health promotion interventions have the potential to address these inequalities and must be made accessible to at-risk populations, including sexual minorities.
With this in mind, this Special Issue is soliciting manuscripts that address health inequalities among sexual minorities, with a particular focus on the practical implications for health promotion in this population. The Special Issue addresses the following questions:
- What are the determinants of health inequalities in sexual minorities and how can they be addressed?
- How should healthcare be designed to have the greatest impact on health inequalities in sexual minorities?
- How can we increase access to, and the acceptability of, healthcare innovations in sexual minorities?
We welcome manuscripts that report qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods empirical research and theoretical contributions focusing on the health inequalities faced by sexual minorities. We seek contributions from the social sciences including, but not limited to, psychology, sociology, and anthropology that draw upon, or test, theories to develop robust recommendations for healthcare.
