Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Pain- and musculoskeletal injury-related conditions are major contributors to global morbidity, disability, and functional impairment. Their complications, such as pain, reduced mobility, and long-term disability can significantly impact quality of life and, in many cases, contribute to increased mortality, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Despite ongoing advances in clinical care, rehabilitation, and preventive strategies, the burden of these conditions continues to grow. There is an urgent need for more effective prevention and rehabilitation approaches and a better understanding of how, for whom, and under what circumstances these strategies may work.

We are pleased to invite submissions to this Special Issue, which aims to showcase research on the efficacy of interventions targeting pain- and injury-related morbidity and mortality outcomes. We welcome original research articles, including clinical trials, novel secondary analyses of interventional studies, as well as systematic or umbrella reviews of clinical trials that are accompanied by meta-analyses. Submissions may include studies from clinical, community, or sports-related settings and should aim to inform rehabilitation theory-practice, enhance recovery, and ultimately reduce the burden of pain and injury in diverse populations.

In addition to clinical, preventive and rehabilitative approaches, we also encourage submissions that explore biomechanical and neuromechanical aspects of pain- and injury-related outcomes. Studies incorporating movement analysis, muscle function assessment, or musculoskeletal modeling to inform intervention design are particularly welcome.

Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Interventions and strategies for acute and chronic pain rehabilitation and management;
  • Interventions and strategies for prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries;
  • Biomechanical and neuromechanical perspectives on movement impairments related to pain and injury (e.g., ACL injury, osteoarthritis);
  • Analyses of moderators, mediators and causal pathways of intervention efficacy addressing pain- and injury-related outcomes.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Healthcare is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
