Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Soft soils are widely distributed in coastal, deltaic, lacustrine, and riverine environments, where rapid urbanization and infrastructure development increasingly require construction on highly compressible ground. Their low permeability, low shear strength, pronounced time dependency, and sensitivity to loading and environmental changes often result in slow dissipation of excess pore-water pressure, excessive settlement, and long-term serviceability problems. Conventional consolidation theories and ground-improvement design approaches may not adequately capture large deformation, soil-structure interaction, spatial variability, complex drainage boundaries, or coupled hydraulic, thermal, chemical, and electrical processes. Addressing these challenges is essential for safer, more resilient, and sustainable geotechnical development.

The goal of this Special Issue is to collect original research articles and review papers that advance understanding of soft-soil consolidation mechanisms and innovative ground-improvement technologies. Consistent with the scope of Geosciences, the collection will connect engineering geology and geomechanics with laboratory investigation, field monitoring, analytical and numerical modelling, and practical applications. Particular emphasis will be placed on mechanistic insight, model validation, performance assessment, and the translation of emerging methods into reliable design and construction practice.

This Special Issue will welcome manuscripts that link the following themes:

  • Fundamental and multiphysics consolidation mechanisms.
  • Constitutive and analytical modelling of soft soils.
  • Physical model tests, field tests, and advanced monitoring.
  • Ground-improvement methods and construction technologies.
  • Foundations, embankments, reclamation, and underground infrastructure on soft ground.
  • Numerical simulation, inverse analysis, and data-driven prediction.
  • Long-term settlement, creep, and soil-structure interaction.
  • Sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon ground engineering.
