Microscopic Archives: Foraminifera as Key Indicators in Stratigraphic and Palaeoenvironmental Studies
This special issue belongs to the section “Sedimentology, Stratigraphy and Palaeontology“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Submissions of high-quality, peer-reviewed manuscripts are invited for rapid, open access publication in a forthcoming Special Issue focusing on foraminifera as key indicators in stratigraphical and palaeoenvironmental research. Both original research articles and comprehensive review papers will be considered for inclusion.
Foraminifera, a diverse group of unicellular marine organisms with a geological range extending back to the Cambrian Period, are central to understanding Earth’s climatic and environmental history. Their broad ecological distribution, excellent fossil preservation, and high sensitivity to environmental changes make them an invaluable proxy in stratigraphical and palaeoenvironmental studies.
Foraminiferal assemblages have played a pivotal role in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. Through shifts in abundance, taxonomic diversity, isotopic composition, and test morphology, these microfossils serve as high-resolution proxies that reflect palaeoenvironmental changes such as ocean temperatures, productivity, circulation, and ice volume. Their widespread occurrence and stratigraphic continuity make them invaluable, providing critical insights into palaeoclimatic variability and oceanographic conditions throughout Earth’s stratigraphic record.
This Special Issue seeks to highlight the versatility and significance of foraminifera as tools for reconstructing palaeoenvironments across various temporal and palaeogeographical scales. Contributions that introduce new regional records and interdisciplinary approaches are particularly welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Geosciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
