Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Primordial black holes, hypothesized to form in the early universe from the gravitational collapse of density fluctuations, represent a unique nexus of cosmology, gravitation and particle physics. This Special Issue will comprehensively explore the multifaceted role of primordial black holes, from their genesis to their ultimate demise and profound implications.

We will solicit contributions detailing modern mechanisms for primordial black hole production, including inflationary models and cosmological phase transitions. A core focus will be the physics of primordial black hole evaporation via Hawking radiation, examining its potential role as a progenitor for dark matter, a source for baryogenesis or a contributor to the cosmic gamma-ray background. Furthermore, the Issue will investigate the cosmological consequences of primordial black holes, encompassing their impact on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the cosmic microwave background and their potential to seed large-scale structures or account for the supermassive black holes observed at high redshifts. By uniting these diverse research threads, this collection aims to critically assess the current status of primordial black hole science and define the observational avenues that will confirm or constrain their existence, thereby shaping our understanding of the early universe and fundamental physics.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Galaxies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
