Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Industrialization and urbanization have brought unprecedented benefits to modern society while simultaneously increasing the inherent risks of technological accidents. Explosions and fires represent two of the most severe and disruptive events across a wide range of critical infrastructure sectors, including chemical and process industries, energy storage and transportation, and the built environment. While direct effects may cause severe damage, their most catastrophic consequences often arise from cascading effects, where the initial event triggers a chain of secondary failures, escalating the magnitude of the disaster. Examples include domino effects in industrial parks, structural collapse following intense explosion and fire, and systemic failure of interconnected infrastructure.

Despite significant progress in safety science, the increasing complexity of modern systems, the advent of new materials and energy technologies, and the intensifying pressure of climate change necessitate a continued and focused advancement in the fundamental understanding and technical capabilities to prevent, mitigate, and respond to fires and explosions. This Special Issue, titled "Advances in Explosion, Fire and Related Cascading Effects: Modeling, Assessment and Prevention", aims to capture the latest frontier research dedicated to enhancing the resilience of socio-technical systems against these extreme events.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Advanced methodologies for explosion and fire modeling;
  • Damage mechanism and protection of critical infrastructures under explosion or fire load;
  • Analysis and prevention of cascading multi-hazard and domino effects;
  • Artificial intelligence applications in explosion and fire incident analysis;
  • Mitigation and prevention of industrial explosion and fire;
  • Computational modeling of fire and explosion phenomena;
  • Advances in hydrogen and battery safety;
  • Advanced Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) models;
  • Analysis and Prevention of failure dependence in complex systems;
  • Resilience assessment and enhancement in cascading extreme events.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
