Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Thraustochytrids are marine eukaryotic microbes. They widely distributed in marine environments, including estuaries, and have been recognized as important decomposers in marine ecosystem. From the viewpoint of ecological research, it has become clear that thraustochytrids can produce diverse extracellular enzymes, including industrially useful enzymes such as cellulases. Additionally, the greatest features of thraustochytrids are their high production of oils. Recent research has demonstrated that thraustochytrids can produce various industrially useful chemical compounds, not only oils but also antioxidants, pigments, and others. Their growth rate is significantly higher in comparison with photosynthetic microalgae because thraustochytrids are heterotrophic, meaning that we can cultivate them as easily as bacteria and can obtain high amounts of biomass containing high amounts of oils. Nowadays, the production of “single cell oils” from thraustochytrids has attracted interest for producing biofuels and/or functional fatty acids such as a docosahexaenoic acid.
This Special Issue is focused on recent developments of thraustochytrid biotechnology with topics of interest including novel techniques for isolating, characterizing, and classifying thraustochytrids; adaptation for mass cultivation; the use of thraustochytrid cells to produce, oils, fatty acids, enzymes, proteins, antioxidants, and chemicals; and industrial fermentation processes and their applications in various industrial fields, including aquaculture.
