Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Steel remains one of the most versatile and sustainable materials in modern construction, enabling the realization of complex architectural forms, long-span structures, and resilient infrastructure. Recent advancements in material science, digital fabrication, and computational design have opened new frontiers for steel structures—ranging from high-strength and corrosion-resistant alloys to additively manufactured components and modular construction systems. However, these innovations also bring forth challenges in structural behavior, connection detailing, lifecycle performance, and sustainability assessment.

This Special Issue aims to bring together cutting-edge research and practical innovations in the field of advanced steel construction. We invite contributions that explore novel steel materials, including high-performance steels and hybrid systems, as well as emerging fabrication techniques such as automated welding, robotic assembly, and 3D printing. Topics of interest also include the structural performance of innovative steel components under extreme loads, fire resistance, fatigue behavior, and the integration of smart monitoring technologies. By showcasing multidisciplinary approaches, this Special Issue seeks to bridge the gap between research and practice, promoting safer, more efficient, and sustainable steel structures for the future.

Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • High-performance steel;
  • Advanced fabrication techniques;
  • Structural performance;
  • Sustainable steel construction;
  • Modular and prefabricated systems;
  • Fire and fatigue resistance;
  • Smart monitoring and diagnostics;
  • Hybrid steel structures;
  • Digital design and optimization;
  • Resilience and lifecycle assessment.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Construction Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
