Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The transition toward a sustainable bioeconomy requires the efficient valorization of renewable non-food carbon resources, particularly lignocellulosic biomass and one-carbon (C1) compounds such as CO₂, methanol, formate and methane. Recent advances in metabolic engineering have enabled the development of microbial cell factories capable of converting these substrates into high-value products. These products have broad applications in food, feed, pharmaceuticals and renewable materials. However, significant challenges remain, including a limited range of target products, low carbon conversion efficiency, inefficient substrate utilization, insufficient strain robustness and the lack of economically viable bioprocesses. This Special Issue aims to highlight cutting-edge research addressing these fundamental bottlenecks and to promote interdisciplinary solutions for the sustainable production of food, feed, chemicals and functional materials. We welcome original research articles and comprehensive reviews covering carbon assimilation pathways, metabolic engineering strategies, enzyme and pathway optimization, microbial chassis development, systems-level metabolic analysis, AI-assisted strain design, bioprocess optimization, techno-economic and life-cycle assessments and industrial translation. We warmly invite researchers from academia and industry to contribute their latest findings and perspectives, fostering scientific exchange and accelerating the commercialization of renewable carbon-based biomanufacturing technologies.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
