Decoding Metabolic Dysfunction: Multi-Omics Biomarkers and Their Modulation by Bioactives

Dear Colleagues,
Metabolic dysfunction causes a wide range of chronic illnesses, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and age-related metabolic decline. Considering the biological complexity and variety of these conditions, using just one or a few biomarkers are often insufficient for accurate diagnosis, risk assessment and monitoring of therapeutic responses.
Advancements in multi-omics technologies (genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and microbiomics) enable systems-level analyses of metabolic regulation and disease mechanisms. These approaches help in creating comprehensive biomarker signatures connected to metabolic dysfunction and monitor how the disease progresses. In parallel, functional and bioactive food components like polyphenols, omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fibers, probiotics, and postbiotics have emerged as promising modulators of metabolic pathways through gene regulation, epigenetic modification, microbiota–host interactions, and metabolic signaling networks.
This Special Issue aims to collect original research articles and reviews focusing on the identification, validation, and modulation of multi-omics biomarkers of metabolic dysfunction and their modulation by bioactive foods. Submissions spanning basic, translational, and clinical research are encouraged, with particular emphasis on mechanistic insights, biomarker-guided interventions, and precision nutrition approaches relevant to chronic disease prevention and management.

- Integrative genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics approaches

- Metabolomic and lipidomic signatures of nutraceutical interventions
- Biomarkers of insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, obesity, NAFLD, and cardiometabolic risk
- Gut microbiota–derived biomarkers and host–microbiome interactions
- Effects of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics on host metabolic profiles
- Translational and clinical studies evaluating nutraceuticals with omics-based endpoints
- Personalized and precision nutrition strategies guided by multi-omics biomarkers
