Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease that involves the cartilage, subchondral bone, synovial membrane and the fibrous articular connective structures. Its arthropathy is characterized by a structural remodeling of the joints, which leads to a decrease in both physical mobility and one’s quality of life. An important factor in the progression of OA is the oxidative stress that sustains a degree of chronic inflammation. Indeed, oxidative stress is defined as a condition of impairment between the production of pro-oxidants, notably reactive oxygen species (ROS), and cellular antioxidant defense capabilities.
The synovial fluid of patients with OA contains significantly reduced levels of antioxidants, such as of superoxide dismutase, glutathione and ascorbate. Additionally, oxidative damage markers, such as lipid peroxides, protein carbonyls and DNA oxidation products, have also been found to be elevated in OA patients, further supporting the role of oxidative stress in the disease’s pathological process.
This Special Issue intends to collect research and review papers that offer new and innovative perspectives upon the evaluation of oxidative stress and the underlying pathogenesis of osteoarthritis. Research efforts made in order to understand the pathogenesis of OA may provide support for the development of new therapeutic strategies, and thus, papers focusing on this area of interest are highly welcomed

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Biomedicines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
