Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
PICASSO STUDIES (THIRD EDITION) will focus on Picasso and language.
Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) had a deep love for the written word and maintained strong relations with writers throughout his life. He made acquaintances with significant French authors and poets, such as Max Jacob, Pierre Reverdy, and Guillaume Apollinaire, after relocating from his home in Spain to the bohemian Montmartre neighborhood of Paris in 1904. Picasso met American expatriate writer Gertrude Stein in 1905. With the help of her brother Leo, Stein became Picasso’s main supporter in Paris until 1914. Later on, he also made friends with authors like André Breton and Paul Éluard. Picasso’s interest in language triggered his experiments in different media, from painting (with the so-called cubism) to sculpture (where he developed the concept of collage in three-dimensional form), to writing itself (composing hundreds of poems where again the main technique had its roots in the interdisciplinary relation between verbal and graphic structures). This third edition focuses on Picasso’s deep and interdisciplinary interest in language, not just as a form of verbal expression, but as a means of dissecting reality.
We request that, prior to submitting a manuscript, interested authors initially submit a proposed title and an abstract of 200–400 words summarizing their intended contribution. Please send it to the guest editors (edm012@shsu.edu) or to Arts editorial office (arts@mdpi.com). Abstracts will be reviewed by the guest editors for the purposes of ensuring proper fit within the scope of the Special Issue. Full manuscripts will undergo double-blind peer review.
