Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Energy-Air Pollution nexus is well recognized and has been studied extensively to limit and eventually reduce the direct impact of the exploitation and use of the energy resources on the atmosphere, and indirectly the effects on other “spheres” (biosphere, hydrosphere, etc.). However, many places still face grave challenges related to the unsustainable use of energy resources with the corresponding impact on low air quality. Emissions from energy-related activities contain various pollutants, including criteria pollutants, photochemical oxidant precursors, aerosol precursors, short-lived and long-lived climate pollutants, and air toxics.

This Special Issue aims to consolidate multidisciplinary research that advances current knowledge on the use of novel approaches to help mitigate the impact of the energy sector on the atmosphere by reducing emissions across its value chain. Studies that explore case studies analysis, scenario modeling, systems integration, technology development and implementation, field intervention, among others, are encouraged. Submissions must demonstrate, quantitatively, the link between energy-related activities and air pollution impacts.

Broad areas of interest for the submissions include but are not limited to:

  • Diagnosis and perspective of current and future energy infrastructure on air quality at urban and regional scales.
  • Technological pathways for cutting-down air pollutant emissions from energy-related activities.
  • Long-term indicators for tracking the impact of energy-related policies on air quality.
  • Impact of COVID-19 on the energy value chain and its relation to observed air pollution levels.
  • Coupled management of energy production and air pollutant forecasts.
  • Smart and sustainable mobility solutions; transportation infrastructure, including freight-related transport.
  • Green fuels and industrial decarbonization.
  • Energy sector decarbonization: co-benefits for air quality improvement.
  • New sensing platforms (low-cost sensors, remote sensing) for energy infrastructure emissions.
  • Characterization and impacts of pollutants emitted from under-represented, energy-related sources (e.g., low-cost cooking stoves, charcoal production, fugitive emissions).
  • Integrate decision-making tools for combined energy/air quality management.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
