Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The birth of viable offspring represents the final stage of the reproductive process, involving estrous cycle monitoring and the use of modern reproductive biotechnologies along the way. However, the arduous work of achieving positive pregnancy can be destroyed in minutes or hours if fetal or neonatal death occurs. For this reason, understanding the physiological particularities of the perinatal period and the development of research aimed at implementing diagnostic tools that enable the early identification of alterations during this period are of fundamental importance for successful embryonic and fetal development. Additionally, in domestic species of zootechnical importance, the disorders of pregnancy, parturition and puerperium have negative impacts on reproductive efficiency, resulting in significant economic losses. Conversely, the increase in human affective bond, especially with the companion species, is directly related to the search for ethical and safe reproduction programs. Therefore, assertive peripartum monitoring will primarily ensure maternal, fetal, and neonatal well-being.
This Special Issue addresses advanced techniques for identifying disorders during the prenatal period, as well as the most modern therapeutic protocols for treating perinatal conditions. The objective of this edition is to compile scientific research of significant impact involving placentation, the endocrinology of pregnancy and parturition, the diagnosis of diseases during pregnancy, complications and clinical and surgical obstetric interventions, and neonatal care in domestic species such as ruminants, equine, swine, small ruminants, canines and felines.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Placentation and placental disorders;
- Endocrinology of pregnancy and parturition;
- Metabolomics of pregnancy and fetal fluids;
- Disorders during pregnancy;
- Diagnosis of pregnancy and pregnancy disorders;
- Immunology of pregnancy;
- Nutritional particularities of pregnancy;
- Predictive factors of parturition;
- Maternal-fetal pharmacokinetics;
- Pain management and treatment of parturition disorders;
- Prematurity;
- Lactation;
- Uterine involution;
- Diagnosis and treatment of puerperal conditions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Animals is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
