Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Urban and peri-urban agriculture is part of a local food system in which food is produced in and around cities, and is marketed to consumers within that area. Crop production, animal-raising, and fish-farming, as well as non-food products such as growing flowers, producing seeds, and ecological services, are all part of urban agriculture. Urban agriculture also includes the processing and marketing of food and non-food products produced in and around urban areas, alongside the uses of compost and (treated or untreated) urban wastewater as resources. Urban agriculture occurs on open land areas in the city as well as in backyards, rooftops, and in indoor spaces. Providing access to fresh food produced in and around the city could have important social (food safety, public health, and community development), economic (community development, resource management, and markets), and environmental (climate change, pollution, and resource management) impacts for a city.

This Special Issue aims to publish novel research findings and review papers that address the production, social, economic, and environmental impacts of urban agriculture.
