Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Growth in global food demand due to population increase and demand for novel products and the potential impact of climate change have created an increased need for effective crop breeding programs to develop new varieties with higher productivity and resilience to the impact of greater biotic and abiotic stresses in agriculture. Efficient plant breeding needs genetic diversity, thus, gene pools with desired traits are of paramount importance. Furthermore, wild crop relatives usually host most of the desired genes, therefore, exploration and characterization of wild genetic resources of important crop species is vital for the efficient utilization of these gene pools for sustainable genetic improvements to assure food security.

However, utilization of the wild crop relatives or the gene pool requires in depth research so as to understand the metabolic pathways and complex interactions of the genes its regulation and also the influence of epigenetic effects. The advent of omics technologies has significantly incresed the amount of data obtained, yet bioinformatics development is still lacking. However it is absolutely necessesary for bioinformatics to help us covert data to information and scientific knowledge, which will allow genetic improvement through traditional and/or genetic engineering methods. This Special Issue covers the recent advances in agriculture with respect to the exploration of Cultivated Species Gene Pool for Improvement of Crops Agronomical Characteristics.
