Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Vaccination is one of the most advanced biotechnological methods which enable health protection of animals against various infectious and parasitic diseases. Some animal productions, like poultry, would not be possible without protection using vaccines because of high microbial susceptibility and pressure. Appearance of novel microorganisms and evolution of old ones pose a threat to farm animals and to human health as well in the present climate change conditions and animal production globalization. Also, farm animals’ selection is focused on high production traits what is followed by their higher susceptibility. So development of new vaccines and its delivery was never so intensive and important as today.

This special issue should focus on innovations in vaccination technologies for optimal stimulation of immune system specific for each pathogen what is prerequisite for optimal protection. So development of specific vaccines (live, attenuated, inactivated, recombinant protein/subunit, vectored, nucleic acid based, reverse genetics, immune complex, DIVA…), epitope combinations, expression systems, adjuvants and delivery methods with focus on broad and long-lasting protection, should be covered by submitted papers. All mentioned factors are of immense importance especially for some productions because of need for prompt, simultaneous and massive vaccination, like in aquaculture or poultry production. Focus should be placed on novel technologies like whole genome sequencing and in silico simulations that enable better insight into the microbial genome/proteome and its interaction with host immune system for faster development of better and smarter vaccines.

This Issue should also aim on vaccine development with specifically focused immune protection without unnecessary health and production side effects of vaccination, protecting not only farm animals but humans as well in “One health” concept, together with reduction of antimicrobial treatment and resistance of different pathogens thanks to vaccination.
