Cover Story: Postgraduate researchers (PGRs) face unique challenges, including workload pressures, isolation, and imposter syndrome, which can significantly impact their mental health and wellbeing. Resilience, a crucial determinant of wellbeing, has been found to be lower in PGRs compared to the general population, further highlighting their vulnerability. This study employed a mixed-methods approach to explore factors affecting PGR wellbeing at a UK institution, using validated scales to measure wellbeing and resilience and semi-structured interviews to provide deeper insights. Key themes include control, balance, and coping. The findings contribute to a growing body of literature, emphasising the urgent need for tailored interventions to support PGRs’ mental health and promote a balanced, resilient research environment. View this paper
