Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

All remarks are marked in the comments. The authors need to expand the conclusions because they are too short. Should be tied to concrete results obtained in the study. I suggest the continuation of these researches in the field conditions.

Line 55 - What the Authors wanted to express using the term "by poor soil properties". I think it should be precisely expressed

Line 73-75 - Please expand the description of the beans. Why growing it is important.

Line 89 - Explain the purpose of seed disinfection. Whether seed disinfection is routinely done before sowing

Line 92 - There should be 2 controls in an experiment - no treatment and soaking in running water

Line 100-105- Treating conditions should be presented in the table as it will make the text easier to understand

Line 121-127- Provide a detailed description of the seedlings treatment

Line 120-130 - It seems to be a separate experience How many seeds were used in this experiment? What are the seeds?

Line 292 - Discussion of the results should be more elaborate

Dear Researchers,

General remarks

The studies presented in the the manuscript entitled: Alleviation of salt-inhibited germination and seedling growth of kidney bean by seed priming and exogenous application of salicylic acid (SA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concern the influence of priming agend (SA and H2O2) on the seed germination process and growth and development of kidney bea seedlings under salt stress. The issues discussed in the paper are important from the point of view of agricultural practice, because the phenomenon of salinity of arable soils is more and more frequent and the possibilities of increasing the resistance of crops to this factor are limited. One of the simple, cheap and effective (in the case of many crops) methods of increasing plant tolerance to environmental stresses is seed priming. Recently, the term has also been used when similar effects are obtained when chemical agents are administered to plants at different developmental stages (e.g., in the vegetative or reproductive stage). The manuscript, although it contains interesting results, should be supplemented and corrected before being published in the Seeds journal. In the chapter: Introduction, it would be worth providing information on the possibility of increasing the resistance of plants to biotic and abiotic stresses by priming seedlings, especially since such a procedure was used by the authors in their work. There is a lot of information on this subject in the literature, so I leave it to the authors to choose the appropriate items.

In addition, the section on materials and methods should be supplemented (including describing in detail the methods of chemicals priming and the stress factor application). It is also necessary to write the Latin name of kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.).

Detailed comments

Why were such concentrations of SA and H2O2 used (were previous experiments carried out or were information from the literature used?)

Line 180 - does the value in brackets mean the average for all combinations with salt stress, if so, please write it in the text of the manuscript

Line 180-182 - check (verify) the accuracy of the data: 19.2, 119.8, 96.9, 81.1, and 62.1% The chart does not show that these values are true!

Line 217 – please specify this sentence

Line 245 Perhaps instead of the phrase "supplementation of SA and H2O2" it would be better to use pretreatment of ...

Line 94 - 50 × 25 cm? diameter)

Line 109- which means the expression "at 22 DAS"

In the chapter on Metarials and Methods (pot experiment), complete the method of applying SA and hydrogen peroxide to kidney bean seedlings (the form of applying these chemical factors and the method of applying NaCl solution and fertilizer)

Line 121- 22.5x25.5 cm?

Line 133 Are you sure the analysis of the water content in the plant tissues was carried out 22 days after planting and not 25 days as indicated in the previous text (Metarials and Methods (pot experiment))?

Line 186 maybe instead of "non-primed normal plants" write native plants

Maybe it is better to use the word reduced instead of curtailed?

Line 214 Chapter 3.2. Exogenous SA and H2O2 enhance growth and RWC of plants under salt stress If the authors describe the results of a pot experiment in this chapter, I don't understand why are they writing about primed seeds? According to the methodology (chapter 2.2), it was not the seeds, but the 17-day-old seedlings that were exposed to SA and H2O2, and then to salt stress. As a result of this experiment, information was obtained about the height of plants and the relative water content in them, as well as the content of assimilation pigments. I also do not understand how the authors performed the treatment of hydro-priming seedlings ? It is not described in the methodology and it is difficult for me to imagine such an operation in relation to seedlings.

141 - what size were the seedlings

146 - "17 day old seedlings" should be added.

152- Hyponex - which one?

153 -Specify the percentage composition of the nutrient solution

Dear Authors,

The authors explained all my doubts regarding the research methodology and the obtained results. They corrected and supplemented the text of the manuscript, thanks to which it became more accessible to both readers who are well-versed in the subject of research and who are not specialists in this field. Line 197 - some text is missing
