Cover Story: Social determinants of health (SDoH) are nonmedical factors that significantly impact health outcomes, including mortality. This study investigates the association between county-level SDoH, as measured by the Multidimensional Deprivation Index (MDI) and fatal crash counts across United States counties. Using Bayesian spatial Poisson regression models, we analyzed the relationship between SDoH and crash fatalities among geriatric (65 years and older) and non-geriatric road users across 3108 contiguous U.S. counties. Our study revealed that counties classified as “very highly deprived” had 23% and 20% higher fatal crash rates for geriatric and non-geriatric road users, respectively. These findings highlight the potential for improving SDoH at the county level to reduce crash fatalities across all age groups. View this paper
