Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript surgeries-1761542 entitled: “Academy of Surgical Research Guideline for Vascular Access Port Use and Maintenance in Large Animals for Biomedical Research”. The paper is intended to give instructions for implanting, maintaining, accessing, and troubleshooting vascular access ports in big animal species to surgeons, researchers and research personnel, veterinary professionals, and IACUCs. I have no comments regarding the protocol itself. In my opinion, the article in the presented version is suitable for publication after major revisions.

Dear authors

Thank you very much for submitting your paper to our journal. Your aim of the study is to provide surgeons, researchers and research staff, veterinary staff, and IACUCs with guidelines for implanting, maintaining, accessing, and troubleshooting vascular access ports in large animal species. I have some comments on your manuscript.

Major comment

1.     Abstract: The citation to the reference should not be included in the abstract (Citation No.1-13).

2.     The main manuscript citation should start with the first reference of manuscript.

3.     Definitions: All definitions need to address the citation to proper references.

4.     Pre-surgical procedures: How the author confirmed that the animal be in good health with no open clinical issues and 54 meet facility requirements for surgery prior to be approved for surgery ?

5.     Pre-surgical procedures: The author should describe the cause of post-operative healing and risk of surgical site infection by poor appetite (such as immunocompromise state by the poor nutritional status)

6.     Pre-surgical procedures: the sentence “The surgical sites should be clipped, using caution to avoid clipper burn or cuts in 58 order to minimize skin irritation and infections.” Should be add the proper timing and place of clipped (such as in the operating room and performed clipped immediate before surgery)

7.     Surgical procedures: the sentence “Administer prophylactic antibiotics (i.e., Cefazolin)”

a.     What is the recommend antibiotic ? (Such as empirical antibiotics or anti gram-positive antibiotics)

8.     Surgical procedures: The authors should more described the location of suture to secure the catheter and port (such as secure the catheter to the skin nearly the skin opening, secure the port device at the base of port implanted – fixed to subcutaneous tissue or muscular fascia ?)

9.     Surgical procedures: The sentence “Consider the use of absorbable suture material. ” What is the recommended type of suture to secure the Port (such as chromic catgut, polyglactin (vicryl), etc.)

10.  Surgical procedure’s part are lack of citations to the proper references. Please add the proper citation to proper reference under Surgical procedure part.

11.  Port access: How to prepare the heparinized saline for infusing the port after access. (The concentration of heparin and proper diluted solution)

12.  The troubleshooting part should be concise.
