Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This review by Perry et al. describes about the molecular mechanism of sexual biofilm formation in the opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida albicans and the comparison with the conventional biofilm. This review is well written and will be interesting not only to Candida researchers but also general readers of Journal of Fungi. Therefore, I strongly recommend this manuscript for publication without revision.

Reviewer 2 Report

This review paper reveals how the opposite mating type induces sexual biofilms in C. albicans. Sexual biofilms formed by white cells provide an environment for opaque cells mating, whereas conventional biofilms protect cells from environmental stresses, immune cell attacks and drug treatments. Regulations of two different types of biofilms are different, too, in both signaling pathway and regulatory network. The authors also discuss that formation of sexual biofilms is triggered by the pheromone-signaling pathway and reveal the mechanisms of two distinct biological responses between white cells and opaque cells in response to pheromone in C. albicans. Overall this review paper is well organized and will be an important contribution to the Candida field, and will be of broad interest to your readership.
