Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors presented interesting extensive work describing the preparation end characterization of nano-ZrO2,nano-ZrCx)@C composites with varying content of ZrO2/ZrCx. The novelty and importance of this work are at a good level, nevertheless here are some questions and recommendations to the authors:

1)         In particular, it is necessary to adjust the resolution of the images, namely: Fig., 2, 4, 5 (in Fig.5 also the legend covers the peaks, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 12!

2)         Results from Raman spectroscopy: The authors should mention in the manuscript text the ID/IG determination with related literature. Same as the details of the fitting procedure. In Table 4. should be also listed the FWHM values. Figure 12 is absolutely confusing due to poor resolution, it must be redesigned so that the fit curves are also clearly visible. What is laser power?

Author Response

First of all, we would like to express our many thanks for the reviewers for their efforts to improve the quality of our manuscript.  The modifications according to their request have bene done and marked in the manuscript.  In detail:

Reviewer 1.

1) In particular, it is necessary to adjust the resolution of the images, namely: Fig., 2, 4, 5 (in Fig.5 also the legend covers the peaks, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 12!

The figures were modified and replaced in the final version of the file, tracking the edition. However, the figures made by NMR and XPS software can’t be manipulated, the improvement of these was purely digital so the quality cannot be as good as we would like.

2) Results from Raman spectroscopy: The authors should mention  in the manuscript text the ID/IG determination with related literature. Same as the details of the fitting procedure. In Table 4. should be also listed the FWHM values.

Three new references were added about the deconvolution method,  intensities ratios interpretation for carbon its oxides and allotropes, and the influence of the temperature on these materials over the first and second order band ratios. In the experimental part of vibrational spectroscopy, it was included the details of the fitting procedure. The FWHM values were added to the table 4.

Figure 12 is absolutely confusing due to poor resolution, it must be redesigned so that the fit curves are also clearly visible.

The quality of figure 12 have been digitally improved. However the fitting space allowed for the journal is not enough for representing it higher detail. As an alternative solution we will include each RAMAN plot separately as annex to the S.I. together with the Origen project in case someone is interested in more detailed factor.

What is laser power?

It has been inserted (50mW)

Reviewer 2 Report

The author developed an easy route to prepare (nano-ZrO2,nano-ZrCx)@C composites with 16 varying content of ZrO2/ZrCx.

I have some comments

  1. The abstract is too long.
  2. Table 1 and Table 4 should be three-line tables.
  3.  Scheme 1 and scheme 2 can be merged into one.
  4.  The fitting peaks in Figure 12 are not obvious.
  5.  Some references are out- of- date.
  6. The conclusinos should be rewrited.

Author Response

First of all, we would like to express our many thanks for the reviewers for their efforts to improve the quality of our manuscript.  The modifications according to their request have bene done and marked in the manuscript.  In detail:

Reviewer 2.

The abstract is too long.

It has been shortened.

Table 1 and Table 4 should be three-line tables.

These have been done.

Scheme 1 and scheme 2 can be merged into one.

It has been done.

The fitting peaks in Figure 12 are not obvious.

In the experimental part of vibrational spectroscopy, the details of the fitting procedure was included. Figure was improved until the size limit of the format.

Some references are out- of- date.

We have inserted some newer references, but some information is given in older papers, and we feel, giving the first source (which is cited in newer ones) is more correct than citing somebody who repeated the previously found information.

The conclusions should be rewritten.

It has been done.
