Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The paper reports molecular dynamics simulations during the nanofriction process of nickel-based polycrystalline superalloy coating. The MS can be published after the following revisions.

  • The quality of the figures is very poor. Some figures look deformed. Please check and revise.
  • The total number of the figures should be reduced. Accordingly, some separated figures could be combined in single figures.
  • Bullet points should be avoided in the Conclusions section.
  • The novelty of this study should be better highlighted in the Abstract and Conclusions. In addition, the interest of this work for coatings applications should be addressed in the Introduction, Abstract and Conclusions.

Reviewer 2 Report

The article concerns study on wear mechanism of Ni-based coatings. The work is well prepared.
Please shorten Abstract. The introduction is well written and relevant to the current literature. The methodology is quite clearly described. The research results are interesting and deserve to be published in Coatings. The conclusions are well written. In my opinion, the work is very interesting.

Reviewer 3 Report

Dear Authors,

Congratulations on your work, which is very well carried out and presented. Please pay attention to some details, which can be improved as follows:

  1. Please try do not use almost always 3 or 4 references for each idea;
  2. Please try to use references from other parts of the world, because your references are predominantly from China;
  3. Please try to highlight the gap you intend to fill with your work, which is not clear. Try also clearly state your main goals. When you refer: "In this paper, MD is used for the first time to carry out repeated friction of the tool in all directions of the workpiece under a constant load." it is not true, because other works have been recently published using Molecular Dynamics Simulation (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apsusc.2021.149606; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.matchemphys.2021.124341; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apt.2021.05.041; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.molliq.2020.114243; https://doi.org/10.1016/j.promfg.2018.07.026; and so on);
  4. Please don't use the units bonded to the value, as in page 3 (3.0nm). Please check all manuscript;
  5. When showing equations, please point out the units of each variable;
  6. There is not a MATERIALS AND METHODS section where the experimental is explained. Please point out the equipments used (brand, model, parameters, etc.) and the procedures used to do the experiments;
  7. It is not clear if your model has been tested in practice and validated by experimental. Thus, please make this clear.
  8. Please refer the technique used to produce the coatings and describe the process, using some references.
  9. The RESULTS are not properly discussed, comparing your results with others previous published, even with other materials and othe focus.

Good luck.

Kind regards,

Reviewer
