Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript presents a very interesting topic concerning the assessment of the germination and yield of maize depending on maize genotype. I recommend a Minor Revision for the manuscript (some comments below):

·         Keywords should not be a repetition of the title - I suggest changing the keywords.

·         Line 134 - were the tests conducted only in the spring of 2022?

·         The description of the weather conditions is not clear enough. In verse 137, the authors write about the temperature in August, while it is not possible to read this value on the chart (the chart shows the numbers of consecutive weeks, so it is not clear which month it is). Lines 138-140 - where did the maximum precipitation average values come from? These values cannot be read on the graph. I suggest that the authors redraft the fragment of the text describing the weather conditions and change graphs 1 and 2 in such a way that they are more readable.

·         Line 161 - Were the seeds actually sown with the Wintersteiger Plotman planter? Such a small number of seeds is difficult to sow mechanically.

·         Line 162 – wedding or weeding?

·         Line 164 - What exactly was the care done during the development of the maize? What does "standard agronomic practices" mean? Please describe your agricultural practices in more detail.

·         Line 167-169 - Were biometric features evaluated based on only 10 plants?

·         Conclusions - in this part of the manuscript, research results should be summarized and, if necessary, recommendations for agricultural practice or other researchers should be made. Literature should not be cited in this section as this is not a discussion.

·         References - authors cite 10 articles that are more than 20 years old. I believe there is more recent literature on this topic that could be used in this manuscript.

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper is very well written. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that different hybrid types do not influence maize germination and yield performance. By exploring various parameters such as germination rate, radicle, and plumule length, number of rows per ear, number of kernels per ear, 1000-kernel weight, and ear weight of different maize hybrid types, we aim to provide valuable insight and recommendations to enhance seed quality by assessing seed viability and vigor and their relationship to yield performance. There are some problems, which should be solved before it is considered for publication.

1 In the section of materials and methods, whether the parent of the maize hybrids such as SC Hybrid, DC Hybrid and TC Hybrid could be obtained and compared in this study. Moreover, why choose the variety MV277 as the control.

2 Why the single hybrids have the better germination potential? Could explain the results from genetic effects in detail.

3 Whether the days from sowing to harvest between maize hybrids is different, because the days from sowing to harvest could be influence the maize yield performance.

4 In some Tables and Figures, the standard error could be added.
