Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Editor

This study investigated the airline network planning considering climate impact. A multi-objective framework was planned to facilitate climate-aware network design by incorporating the objective to minimize flight average temperature response (ATR) when optimizing the airline network.

1.     This is the case for the aviation industry, responsible for 2.4% of CO2 emissions and 3% of the EU total greenhouse emissions, according to [3? ]… Remove the question mark

2.     We introduced ATR20 286 into the objective function using the formulation presented in Equation 1…Eq. needs a reference.

3.     We also performed a comprehensive comparison of the results for three representative airline types. The comparison showed how climate-aware network design in combination with OIs can assist in climate impact mitigation. Such an advancement offers great potential to enhance the effectiveness of network planning and decision-making processes in the aviation industry, leading to more efficient and sustainable operations…compare your results with other reports in a table

The manuscript effectively presents the objectives, methodology, and findings in a clear and concise manner. The abstract provides a comprehensive summary of the research, highlighting the significance of climate-aware network design and the assessment of operational improvements in the aviation industry. The introduction successfully establishes the research gap, emphasizing the need for immediate actions and the integration of operational improvements into network planning. The contributions are clearly outlined, and the conclusion succinctly summarizes the study’s outcomes.

Based on my thorough assessment of the manuscript, I do think that the manuscript can be accepted for publication in applied science after addressing these minor comments:

1) line (24) please revise the reference and remove the sign “?”

2) lines 37- 40 can you rewrite these sentences to include the references in a suitable way

3) line (75) I do think that you start reporting what has been done in study 14 as the first study

4) I do think that you should discuss the climatic KPIs somewhere in the introduction

5) line)82- 86) I do think that you need to include some references here

6) line 95- 98) I suggest clearly stating this debate to enhance the significance of the MS

7) line 100) Please add “as follows: “

8) line 123) Can you please add the sources where you get ART 20 and ART100 if available

9) in Figure-1 can you please add some details to the flow chart to reflect the steps of the methodology

10) lines (183) please remove the “.”

11) line 228) please add “of’’ to be “solutions of the different”

12) in Equation 1 and the related lines describe it, can you please justify the dependence on the ATR 20 and not the ATR100 in the equation

13) generally, please consider revising the appearance of the abbreviation and adding the abbreviation the first time that appears in the manuscript.
