Reviewer 1 Report

Please further elaborate on the novelty of the presented study. Please explain in more detail on the specific gap you want to bridge in this article. How the application of your work could be extended beyond the investigated case study?

The presented introduction is pretty modest.  Please include the latest research studies related to your work preferably between 2018 and 2022.

Please include a subsection in the introduction as a research significance to explain the novelty of your work. Please include a brief summary of using rehabilitation techniques to improve the structural resistance against slamming impact in corrosive environment following the outcomes of the work titled Effect of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Tubes Filled with Recycled Materials and Concrete on Structural Capacity of Pile Foundations.

Please include a subsection in the introduction as a research significance to explain the novelty of your work.

Please further explain the limitations, boundary conditions, and main assumptions of the performed finite element simulation.

Please include statistical characteristics based on the reported pressure time history in Figure 9.

Please include a comparative analysis on the reported deformations in the vertical direction to further identify the variations based on height and thickness.

Please a add compelling discussion based on the mentioned results in figure 12 to further analyze the effect of deflections based on the reported distances.

Please include statistic parameters and the best trend line in Figure 13.

Please revise the conclusion and include a quantified-based approach to further highlight the key outcomes if this study.

Please include recommendations for future research related to your work.

In this manuscript, the authors studied the fluid-structure interactions of a flat rectangular steel box subjected to slamming on a watered surface. The plastic deformation of the sheet metal forming the box was measured and compared with experimental results from literature.

In the opinion of the reviewer, the paper can be recommended for publication in applied sciences Journal after the following revisions:

- The main findings of the current research should be added at the end of the abstract.

- Section 2: It is preferable to add a table describing the material properties (reference of the material type, young modulus, poisson coef, yield stress …)

- As a numerical model, it is best to specify whether the simulation is meshless or not. If a mesh is used, the author should add a short description of the mesh elements type and properties.

- Section 3.1 line 178 Abaqus is a well-known piece of software, so there is no need to add a definition or description; however, it is best to specify whether the integration scheme used is explicit or implicit, dynamic or static...

- Information on the contact interaction between the box and the fluid should be specified in Section 3.1.

- In Table 2, the ultimate strain is unitless, but the thickness is in mm.

- In Figure 5, 6 it is best to compare the results with the experimental curve to test the sensitivity of the mesh with efficiency.

- In Figures 10 and 11, the authors should specify the area of the box where plastic deformation was studied.

- In Figure 12, it is better to replace the landmarks with a curve (line) for the experimental measurement.

- it is preferable that the authors make their own experiment because the principle is very simple and easy to prepare in their laboratory

- In the conclusion section, authors should highlight the novelty of their article.
