Early Life Added Sugars and Associated Appetite, Satiety, Growth and Adiposity in the First 2 Years of Life
Highlights
- Added sugar intake increased rapidly over the first two years of life, mainly driven by the consumption of foods typically classified as ultra processed and the use of table sugars during food preparation.
- Higher added sugar intake (≥7 g/day) was associated with higher emotional overeating, food fussiness, waist circumference and lower length for age.
- Longer exclusive and continued breastfeeding were associated with lower added sugar intake.

- Strengthen public health messaging on added sugar avoidance for babies and infants, including juice drinks and desserts
- Establish evidence surrounding potential benefits of applying front-of-pack warning labels to commercial baby foods and infant formula products containing added sugars
