Home Parenteral Support in Chronic Intestinal Failure—First Results from a Pioneer Portuguese Intestinal Failure Center
Highlights
- For legal reasons, HPS in Portugal has lagged behind that in other European countries. Legislation has now changed. The authors report their pioneering experience as the largest Portuguese IF center.
- Twenty-three patients with type III IF were recruited. Short bowel syndrome was the most frequent underlying condition. Of these patients, 2 received Teduglutide.
- The patients’ BMI increased significantly. The most frequent complication was CRBSI, mostly with Gram-positive bacteria.
- Average survival was 43.4 months; 1 death was due to HPS-related complications.
