Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This is a very interesting topic that is of global interest.

The research method is well described, however, it is suggested to review the related studies. I would also recommend that more clearer explanation of the relationship between environmental sustainability and economic growth be added. In the short term, the issues such as cost may have a bigger effect in some area.

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript presented by Camila Callegari, Tarik Tanure et al., entitled ”The role of sustainable urban solutions in meeting Brazilian climate commitments”, it looks more like a government report than a scholarly article.

The methodology tends to overcomplicate the methods used.

The results are in the same approach similar to an institutional report.

Climate issues are little discussed, although in the title of the paper the discussion seems to be center around climate issues.

Reviewer 3 Report

The topic that the article deals with is of the utmost relevance and importance. The lack of instruments that make it easier for urban planners and decision makers to evaluate different urban solutions from the point of view of sustainability is one of the main reasons that today prevent a better environmental commitment of cities. I only have a few minor changes to suggest.

Abstract

Rephrase the sentences (Line18, Line 24 and Line 25):

“As such, here we developed an approach to help decision-makers evaluate sustainable solutions, considering aspects such as emission rate, economic attractiveness, job creation, and local competitiveness in an intersectoral  fashion”.

“Our results show that the solutions with the greatest impact are often related to 23 new technologies, such as renewable energies, which depend on institutional and financial arrange-24 ments that are beyond the administrative capacity of the vast majority of municipalities”.

“ Despite 25 such limitations, Brazilian cities can act as regulators or provide financial incentives and advocacy 26 to promote sustainable solutions in the urban environment”.

in a way that " As such" and "such as" do not appear so closely and four times in the same paragraph.

1.    Introduction

Line 34. “ The urban population is expected to nearly double by 2050.” What is the source of this statement?

Line 47.Nevertheless, real action often remains incipient in cities due to public authority 47 tends to make very short-term decisions, without truly diagnosing the problem. What is the source of this statement?

2. Materials and Methods

Figure 1. Methodological structure. Figure 1 is very important because it contains the methodology framework. However, it is not well explained in the text. I think it should be explained in detail and the reason for the different colors.
