Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article entitled "Networks of rural innovation in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals: A quadruple helix case study" tackles an interesting question.

The context of the study and its objectives are clearly stated in the introduction. The theoretical framework details the quadruple helix approach and its relevance to the study. The methodology specifies the sources and tools used to collect data. The results are in line with the study's objectives.

Minor comments:

1- Abstract : After the study objectives (lines 12 & 13), briefly specify the methodology before the results presented on line 14.

2- Methodology : The section 3.2.1 and 3.2.2 have the same title, please correct.

3- Results. This section also discusses the results. It would therefore be better to write "Results and Discussion".

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript is well written and well presented. However, it needs an elaboration on how the data were analyzed. I suggest authors to explain how the four thematic areas shown in Figure 1 were drawn.

Please provide the limitations of the study.

English looks good except minor typos and/or edits. For example, on page 4 line 182 'if' should be 'of'. Page 5 line 202, 'is' missing.

Reviewer 3 Report

The study is of a very high standard, with only a few minor shortcomings and details that need to be fine-tuned.

- The term used in the paper (quadruple helix approaches) is defined in chapter 2.2 - it is worth briefly introducing it in the Introduction (I.) to help the reader.  'Quadruple helix approaches can be particularly useful for sustainability, which demands partnerships between stakeholders, including local ones to enhance localized solutions.' (Line 51-52)

The 'rural revitalization program' is hardly known to the international readers. 1-2 paragraphs would be worth describing how the rural revitalization program was created, what are its features (how it is implemented, how it is financed, how long it runs,...) 'The experiences developed in this rural revitalization program under study can hopefully provide meaningful responses to these questions.' (Line 63-64)

The study basically describes the good practices and positive impacts of the specific rural revitalisation programme - however, it is not clear what problems have arisen during implementation and how these could be addressed (how to keep the business community interested and motivated to participate in the implementation).  Identifying the problems is as important as describing the positive results. In a case study, it would be important to see what specific and structural factors contributed to the success of the programme, how the results contribute to the further development of the rural revitalisation programme. These are particularly important gaps, as these experiences (identifying success and failure factors) can lead to further development of the quadruple helix approach.

The study is linguistically correct, only minor problems can be detected  through vs by). Only minor English editing required
